
Maryland Fifth After Day One Of ACC Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland women's swimming and diving opened the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships this evening in Chapel Hill, N.C. Maryland is currently in fifth place with 58 points while North Carolina leads the competition with 72 points.
The Terrapins started the night with a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay behind North Carolina and Virginia. The Maryland squad of freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.), freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.), junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) and senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) swam a season best and NCAA B-cut time of 7:17.61 to score 32 points for the Terps.
In the 200 medley relay, Maryland swam to a sixth-place finish with the squad of senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados), Malanina, senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) notching a season-best time of 1:43.67. The squad tallied 26 points for Maryland.
ACCs will continue tomorrow morning with prelims in the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free starting at 11:00 a.m. Finals for these events plus the 200 free relay will begin at 7:00 p.m. Men's 3-meter diving and women's 1-meter diving will also be held tomorrow.
