Maryland finishes its three-game homestand to open the 2010-11 season with a Sunday afternoon matinee against Maine. The Terrapins are 2-0 after their thrilling 75-74 victory over the College of Charleston on Wednesday in the second game of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer College Park Regional.
Freshman guard Pe'Shon Howard hit the game-winning basket with 4.6 seconds left, as the Terrapins rallied against the tough Cougars. Howard finished with 14 points and four assists off the bench.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams continued to have a strong start to the season, leading the Terrapins with 26 points and 15 rebounds against the College of Charleston. Williams, a member of the preseason top-50 for the Wooden Award, has posted double-doubles in four straight games, including the two NCAA Tournament games at the end of last year. He had 15 rebounds each in the first two games, becoming the first Maryland player to have 15 boards back-to-back since Joe Smith did it vs. Duke (3/1/1995), Virginia (3/5/1995) and Florida State (3/10/1995).
Senior forward Cliff Tucker has scored in double figures in both games thus far for Maryland. He had 16 points in the 105-76 win over Seattle University last Monday and added 15 points against Charleston on Wednesday. Tucker averaged 5.7 points per game last year.
Maine comes to College Park in the midst of a tough season-opening road trip. The Black Bears played Friday night at Utah Valley University (Orem, Utah) , winning 71-66 in overtime, and then flew to College Park for the Sunday matinee.
Maryland head coach Gary Williams enters his 22nd season at his alma mater and his 33rd season overall. His 651 victories place him fifth on the list of NCAA Division I victories among active coaches.
