Storyline
Maryland finishes its three-game, week-long stretch of road games with a matchup at No. 7 Villanova. The game is the Terrapins' fourth of the season against a nationally ranked team and fifth against a team that had received votes in a poll at the time of the game.
The Terrapins' five losses this season have come by a combined 27 points, and all were two-possession games down the stretch. Four have come against teams ranked in the Top 25 at the start of the season and the fifth came to a Boston College team that is now 3-0 and sits atop the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Maryland is 4-1 in its last five games (lone loss in that stretch at No. 1 Duke) and has played improved defense of late. The Terrapins have held their last five opponents to .331 shooting from the floor and .291 shooting from behind the arc.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams earned his 14th double-double of the season and his 10th straight on Wednesday at Wake Forest. Despite going 2-for-13 from the floor, Williams hit nine free throws on his way to 13 points. He matched his season-high on the glass with 15 rebounds. Only Len Elmore (12 straight to end the 1973-74 season) has more consecutive double-doubles at Maryland.
Senior guard Cliff Tucker led Maryland in scoring at Wake Forest with 21 points, one off his career-high. Tucker, who leads Maryland with 22 3-pointers this season, is averaging 14.4 ppg over his last five games, all games in which he hit double figures.
Scouting the Wildcats
Villanova is riding a 10-game winning streak including two straight over teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25... The Wildcats, who are 15-1 this season including 10-0 at home, beat then-No. 24 Cincinnati on Sunday and No. 18 Louisville Wednesday.
Guards Corey Stokes, Corey Fisher and Maalik Wayns make up one of the most dangerous backcourts in the nation as all three are averaging double-figure scoring... Stokes, who had a team-high 23 points on 5-of-9 shooting (4-of-7 3PT; 9-of-9 FTs) against Louisville, leads the team with 17.0 ppg... A senior, Stokes is connecting on a Big East-best 93.9 percent of his free throws and ranks third in the conference in 3-point FG percentage (46.8).
Fisher, also a senior, is averaging 15.3 ppg, while Wayns adds 13.3 ppg and 5.7 apg. Senior forward Antonio Pena and sophomore center/forward Mouphtaou Yarou make up a frontcourt that has helped Villanova rank second in the Big East in rebounding margin at +8 rpg... Most recently, the Wildcats held a 41-25 advantage on the boards over Louisville.
Dominic Cheek is the only player outside the starting five averaging more than 20 minutes a game... The 6-foot-6 sophomore guard is averaging 7.6 ppg and 4.1 rpg...
Villanova leads the Big East in free throw percentage (.771), ranks second in FG percentage defense (.380) and third in scoring defense (61.8 ppg).
Gary Williams' 22nd Season

He is the 5th-winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I men's basketball with an overall record of 660-370 (.640)... He ranks 3rd all-time (2nd active) among coaches at ACC schools with 453 victories at Maryland, and also ranks 2nd among active league coaches with 185 regular-season ACC victories... Williams is the Terps' all-time winningest coach...
He earned his 400th victory at his alma mater on 11/21/2008 with an overtime win over Vermont...
Maryland's 70-65 victory over Boston College (2/6/2008) gave Williams his 600th career victory... Only 10 other active head coaches in Division I have 600 career wins...
Williams is only the 24th head coach in history to reach 650 career Division I victories and the 35th at all divisions, including both active and inactive coaches... He currently ranks 23rd and T34th, respectively, on those two all-time victory lists.
