Opening Statement
"I'll be honest, we built the lead, I was really proud of our team. We were really guarding, we were executing. They were changing their defenses and we were handling it. Guys were doing a lot of good things out there. I was really proud of John Auslander. He was big, and with JT [Jonathan Thomas] they gave us nine points in the first half. The whole key to the game was they started pressing and we didn't handle the press. If we just handle the press, in a press offense that I believe in that I have seen work at the highest level against the best teams. We'll get better at it. We handle the press, we win by 20, but when we don't handle it, we give them confidence. They're a good basketball team. They were hard to guard, they went small. We're limited on numbers. I had all four of our guards out there trying to match up with them. We got tired, and that had a lot to do with Terrell's free throws. For the most part, I was pleased for our guys. We made it a little too interesting with the free throws at the end."
On having team discipline
"They stayed within the system. We had three or four things we were doing against the zone and we stuck with it. I thought defensively we were much better. Our transition was bad at times. Our turnovers are so bad, we give up some easy ones. We give up four to six points just off turnovers a half. I was really pleased at the start of the second half. Guys were playing well. We just didn't handle the press. If we just handle their press, we're really happy right now. We just didn't do it. Then we got fatigued and we didn't guard the ball very well."
On John Auslander
"John does everything right. Physically he can't do some things that he has to try to do, but he does everything right. He guards right every time. Had a charge in the second half and they didn't call it. He's in the right position, he knows every play. He understands how to play the game. We're teaching other guys how to play the game right now and they can learn from John. His energy was great. He gave a lot guys some confidence. John gave us huge minutes tonight and I rewarded him, I started in the second half because he played well."
On Sean Mosley's shot selection
"He was trying to be unselfish. Sean's been playing well. Six shots is not enough. He's got to get to the foul line more, he's got to do more, but I don't think that was the game. If we had handled the press right, we could have gotten into our sets and executed a little bit better and he might have ended up with eight or nine or 10 shots which would have been enough. Sean's another guy with a high basketball IQ, who does everything right. His ankle was bothering him tonight. We've got to get him healthy before Tuesday."
On Terrell Stoglin
"I think he took one bad shot in the first half. He shot a quick one in the second half, but it was still a good shot in the lane when things weren't going well. He made plays that no one else could make. He got to the foul line, just couldn't make free throws. I thought offensively Terrell was pretty good. I thought most of the stuff was within what we are trying to do as a team. He's just got to guard better. He got tired and he quit guarding. He's come a long way defensively. He's really trying."
On Berend Weijs starting
"Every day is different with my big guys, but I thought Berend played well. Berend is giving me everything he has every day. He's trying as hard as he can try. That's why I rewarded him. Defensively he played well, rebounded well, got some buckets for us. I thought that he and James, with the minutes that they had, played pretty well."
On the free throw opportunities:
"Honestly, they felt good. I was trying to figure out why they were off too. I have to make them."
On feeling fatigued:
"At the end of the game I do, but during the game I'm just trying to win."
On Florida Gulf Coast's press:
"We panicked and picked up the dribble when we shouldn't have. I feel like we were waiting for the double team to come instead of just going."
On the team's effort:
"I thought our effort was great. I feel like the reason we won today was because of our defense. We pride ourselves on our defense this year and we're going to keep working on it."
On John Auslander:
"He's helping us a lot because he's putting in the work. He's always ready to play hard. I was happy he got his break tonight."
On the team's offensive play:
"I think we executed our offense a lot better than we did in Puerto Rico. We played together mostly as a team. We're getting better at rebounding and playing team defense, so it's a stepping stone. We just have to take steps to get where we want to be."
On being ahead during the start of the game:
"They played hard throughout the whole game and didn't give up. We didn't settle just because we were up by 16 points. They had that last run, but we finished the game off and got a win."
On John Auslander:
"He's stepping up big time. You wouldn't think he's a walk-on. You would think he has played games at this level before. We need guys coming off the bench to provide the extra boost and get the players going. He's doing a great job of bringing the energy every day in practice and it has rolled over to the games. He has proven that he can play against any team that coach puts him out on the court with."
On John Auslander:
"He's very valuable. He's been through a lot, so he is very motivated to come out and play hard and help the team as much as he can. He's very excited to get a chance on the court, so he's going to make the most out of his opportunity."
On the team's confidence after the win:
"[The win] gives us confidence because we wanted to show that we got better from Puerto Rico. We have to win and continue to get better. We want to win these games that we have big leads in and not let the other team get close."
FGCU Coach Andy Enfield
On FGCU's team play:
"We've had a very challenging schedule. We're 2-0 at home and 0-4 on the road and all four of our road games were close. We had a chance tonight. It was a four-point game with under two minutes. We had a transition, but we dribbled the ball off of our legs out of bounds. That was a big possession for us tonight where we had a transition and one of our guards dribbled it off his legs out of bounds. They are unforced turnovers and bad breaks that cost you games when they are one or two possession games down the stretch. We've had a challenging schedule, but we understand we are losing those tight ones because we haven't executed in crucial moments. We have played extremely hard defensively and outscored Maryland tonight in the second half. We're close, but we need to play more consistently throughout the entire game."
On having a young team:
"We have four freshmen and two sophomores that play a lot of minutes. We are young, but this is not an excuse. We have to go out and play. Hopefully some of our younger players will learn from some of these early season road games and we will be a better team for it."
On FGCU cutting the lead late:
"We play hard. Our players are competitors and they play hard. It didn't surprise me that we came back; in fact that's what our coaching staff expects. We were down by 16 to TCU and lost at the buzzer by one. We were down by 16 to Maryland tonight and we had a chance in the last minute and a half to make it a one possession game. We are playing some quality teams on the road and we expect to learn from this."
On FGCU's growth going forward:
"You have to learn from your experiences and mistakes. If we improve on [those mistakes], it would pay huge dividends but that's something we'll continuously work on in the next couple weeks."
