Storyline
Maryland returns to Atlantic Coast Conference play with the first of two road games against teams battling for position in the league standings when it travels to Boston College for an early Saturday afternoon game. The Terrapins also play at Virginia Tech on Tuesday night.
The Terrapins have won five of their last six and are tied for fifth with Virginia Tech in the ACC standings at 5-4. Boston College is a half-game behind at 5-5. The Terps, Eagles and Hokies are within a game of Clemson, which is in fourth at 6-4 coming into the weekend games.
In Maryland's 5-1 stretch in its last six outings (lone loss to #5 Duke), the Terps have gotten solid offensive play and have continued to play well defensively. The Terps are averaging 79.7 points per game and allowing opponents just 64 ppg and .410 shooting from the floor. Maryland is also hitting 71 percent from the free throw line and .393 from 3-point range in the last six games.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams was named Friday to the midseason watch list for the Naismith Award. He leads the Terrapins in scoring (17.3 ppg) and rebounding (11.9 rpg), and also leads the ACC on the boards.
Maryland put six players in double figures in Wednesday's 106-52 win over Longwood, including three freshmen - Terrell Stoglin (15), Haukur Palsson (13) and Pe'Shon Howard (11). It was the first time three Terrapin freshmen scored in double figures since 2/6/1999 when Lonny Baxter (14), Juan Dixon (11) and Danny Miller (11) hit double figures in an 88-72 win over Virginia.
Scouting the Eagles
After starting 3-0 in ACC play, Boston College has gone 2-5 over its last seven games and stands at an even 5-5 in conference play, 15-9 overall... Four of those losses, however, were on the road, with the one home loss coming to then-No. 23 North Carolina... The Eagles are 10-3 overall in homes games this season...
Reggie Jackson is third in the league in scoring (18.0 ppg) and is fourth in the league in 3-point FG percentage, coming into Saturday's game connecting on .417... Jackson's 115 assists this season are third in the conference... Senior forward Joe Trapani ranks sixth in the league in rebounds (7.5) and eighth in scoring (14.9) and is coming off a 22-point, eight-rebound performance in a 77-69 loss at Clemson...
Biko Paris joins Jackson in the BC backcourt and is another threat from beyond the arc... Paris is shooting .387 from 3FG and averages 10.4 ppg... He had a career-high 22, including six 3-pointers, in BCs win over Maryland on Dec. 12... The Eagles continue to be one of the better teams in the nation at taking care of the ball, turning it over just 10.7 times a game, which leads the ACC and is seventh nationally...
Forward Danny Rubin and center Josh Southern round out the starting lineup for the Eagles... Corey Raji comes off the bench to average 12.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg and was key in BCs win over Maryland... He had 11 points and nine rebounds and scored the game's final six points.
