Storyline
Maryland heads into its weekend series with Miami after splitting a pair of mid-week games, blanking Delaware State 8-0 at home before falling at James Madison in 12 innings on Wednesday. The shutout of DSU was Maryland's fourth this season, the most by a Terrapin team since 2007 when they have five. On Wednesday, meanwhile, Maryland erased an eight-run deficit to take a 10-9 lead in the seventh inning, but the game ultimately went into extras where the Dukes won it with a pair of doubles in the 12th.
The Terrapins have been much improved at the plate recently, as they are hitting .285 as a team over the last eight games, 38 points better than their season average. Freshmen have played a big role in Maryland's recent success, as Austin Kilbourne (11-for-22), Tim Kiene (9-for-27) and Charlie White (9-for-29) are all hitting above .300. Michael Montville, another freshman, made his return from a broken hand last weekend against Clemson and is hitting .294 since coming back. He also had the game-winning hit in last Sunday's 7-6 triumph over the Tigers. Junior shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez, who will be making his 100th consecutive start on Friday, has also been swinging a hot bat. Rodriguez has hit safely in seven of the last eight games and is 11-for-30 (.367) overall during that stretch.
David Carroll, who ranks 14th in the ACC with a 2.94 ERA, will start on the mound Friday night. The junior was named the CBB 360 Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago for his performance against No. 7 Florida State, in which he pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings. Carroll has logged at least seven innings in five of his eight starts this season and ranks 10th in the conference with 49 innings pitched. Maryland's Saturday and Sunday starters have yet to be determined.

About the Hurricanes...
Miami, which is ranked 19th in this week's Collegiate Baseball Poll, comes into the weekend on a eight-game winning streak. The Canes are 22-11 overall, 11-3 in the ACC and have won 17 of the last 20 games, with the three losses coming from a sweep at home by Georgia Tech. Miami has also won six straight road games.
The Miami pitching staff is holding opponents to a .215 batting average, second-best in the ACC, and its 3.23 ERA ranks fourth in the conference. Freshman lefty Bryan Radziewski, the Friday-night starter, owns a 5-2 record, has 48 strikeouts and 15 walks and has allowed 14 earned runs on 37 hits in 42 innings. Saturday starter Eric Whaley, a sophomore right-hander, is 5-1 with a team-high 49 strikeouts to just 12 walks, having allowed 17 earned runs on 37 hits in 48 innings. Sunday starter E.J. Encinosa, another sophomore right-hander, leads the ACC with a .175 opponent batting average. He has allowed just 27 hits and 14 earned runs in 44 1/3 innins while striking out 42 and walking 15 this year.
First baseman Rony Rodriguez paces the Miami offense in batting average (.313), slugging percentage (.556) and home runs (5). The junior was the ACC Co-Player of the Week two weeks ago after going 6-for-8 with seven runs while helping the Canes to a 3-0 mark. Infielder Harold Martinez is tops on the team in RBI (27) and fifth with a .291 batting average. Sophomore Zeke DeVoss leads the ACC with 21 steals and is hitting .308.
SERIES HISTORY: Maryland trails the all-time series with Miami, 3-9. The Canes swept the three-game series last year in Coral Gables. The teams last met in College Park in 2006, with the Canes taking two of three.
