Summer League Update

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - As the regular season winds down and the playoffs approach in summer wooden-bat leagues around the country, a number of Terrapins are having impact seasons for their teams.
The regular season for most summer leagues wraps in late July before the playoffs begin in early August. Following that, the players will have a break before returning to campus for the fall semester in late August as Maryland readies itself for the 2012 season.
New England League
- Tim Kiene (Newport Gulls), who caught fire down the stretch run for Maryland in his freshman season, is having a productive summer as the Gulls sit in first place. Through 26 games Kiene was batting .330 with 18 RBIs, six home runs and a .543 slugging percentage. Kiene has recorded seven multiple-hit games, including two 3-hit efforts and a 4-hit game. He was named an East Division starter for the NECBL All-Star Game, which will be played July 27.
- Left-hander Jimmy Reed (Danbury Westerners) has been one of the most effective relievers in the league, having given up just one earned run in 18.2 innings (0.48 ERA) while racking up 29 strikeouts. Reed, who is holding opponents to a .169 batting average, will face off against Kiene in the July 27 All-Star Game as he was named a reliever for the West Division.
- Another rising sophomore, Kyle Convissar (Danbury Westerners) is hitting .311 in 17 games played, along with nine RBIs, 11 runs and two home runs. Fellow rising sophomore and Severna Park graduate Alex Ramsay also played in 12 games for the Westerners before his summer season was cut short.
- Michael Montville (Samford Mainers) has a team-high five home runs in 18 games. The rising sophomore outfielder is hitting .274 with 15 RBIs and 10 runs.
- Through four starts, David Carroll (Newport Gulls) was 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA, having recorded 10 strikeouts in 20 innings. In his two wins, Carroll allowed a total of just one run and six hits in 12 innings.
Cal Ripken League
- Sander Beck (Youse's Orioles) started the `Mid-Atlantic Classic' between the Cal Ripken League and the Valley League on July 11th. Beck retired all three batters he faced with one strikeout in an inning of work as the Ripken League went on to a 6-3 victory. A rising senior, Beck has pitched in five games (four starts) with one complete game, compiling a 2.42 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP with 32 strikeouts in 26.0 innings.
- Michael Boyden (Alexandria Aces) has pitched in seven games, including six starts, and compiled a 4.80 ERA. In 30.0 innings pitched, Boyden has struck out 33 and owns a 2-1 record. On July 14, Boyden went 5.0 innings without giving up a hit while striking out five in a 4-0 win over the Rockville Express.
- Rising sophomore catcher Greg Olenski (Alexandria Aces) has played in 25 games and is hitting .227. The Philadelphia native has recorded four multi-hit games, scored 11 runs, tallied five RBIs and hit one homer.
New York League
- After hitting .371 in 32 games as a sophomore, Jordan Hagel (Oneonta Outlaws) has carried that success into the summer league. Hagel is batting .320 in 25 games with 12 runs, eight RBIs and two home runs as the Outlaws sit in second place of their division.
Prospect League
- Rising sophomore speedster Charlie White (Danville Dans) leads the league with 24 stolen bases. White, who finished his freshman season at Maryland batting a team-best .304 with 17 stolen bags, is hitting .252 with 18 runs and 15 RBIs in 35 games for the Dans.
Northwoods League
- Through 33 games rising sophomore infielder/pitcher Jake Stinnett (Wilmer Stingers) has 28 hits, 27 RBIs, 11 runs and four home runs. He has also made six appearances on the mound, all in relief, and owns a 3.52 ERA in 7.2 innings.
- Outfielder Korey Wacker (St. Cloud River Bats) played in 30 games and hit .250 while scoring 18 runs and stealing nine bases before his season was shut down.
Hamptons League
- Left-hander Ben Brewster (Sag Harbor Whalers) has a 1-0 record and is 2-for-2 in save opportunities. Another rising sophomore for Maryland, Brewster has a 0.79 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings, having made all eight of his appearances in relief.
