Terps Complete Weekend Sweep

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Maryland volleyball team (16-13, 7-10) completed its second consecutive weekend sweep with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-20) defeat of Virginia Tech Saturday evening at Cassell Coliseum. The Terps have now won four consecutive matches and six of their last seven.
The Terps received offensive contributions from eight different players. Ashleigh Crutcher had a team-high 13 kills. Adreené Elliott had 12 kills and five blocks, while Kelsey Hrebenach hit a perfect 10-for-10 and added four blocks and two service aces.
As a team, the Terps totaled a season-high 10 aces. Mackenzie Dagostino and Remy McBain each tallied three to lead the squad.
After Maryland won the opening two sets, Virginia Tech extended the match with a third-set victory. In set four, the Terrapins hit .324 and Crutcher knocked down eight of her 13 kills to help seal the win for Maryland.
The Terps used an early 6-1 run behind the strong play of Crutcher and Elliott. The combo each had a kill and combined on two blocks during the spurt. The Hokies cut the lead to 12-11, but back-to-back kills by Elliott and Kamrin Gold forced a Virginia Tech timeout.
Following the timeout, the Hokies regained the lead at 15-14 and led 17-15 before McBain knocked down a kill and tallied two consecutive service aces to give Maryland the lead right back. Tied 19-19, Elliott followed a Crutcher kill with one of her own to increase the lead to two points. Maryland went on to win the set 25-20.
Maryland used a strong defensive performance to win the opening set. Hrebenach had three blocks and Mary Cushman provided the offense with four kills. The first set was tight with 17 ties and lead changes. With the set tied at 21, Dagostino scored an ace, which forced Virginia Tech to call a timeout. McBain followed with a kill and a Virginia Tech error gave the Terps set point. Dagostino closed it out on the next point with another ace.
After trailing 5-2 in the second set, Maryland earned a 9-7 lead and eventually increased it to 16-13. Cushman added a kill on the next point and the Terps did not look back. Maryland scored three of the final five points in the set to go up 2-0.
Facing defeat, the Hokies responded in the third set. Virginia Tech used a 7-3 run midway through the frame to lead 18-12. The Terps cut the lead to 21-17, but did not get closer as the Hokies extended the match.
