Aaron Etchison and Alfredo Rodriguez had two hits each and three Terps had two-RBI games as Maryland used a balanced offensive attack to defeat George Washington 8-6 Tuesday night.
Eight of Maryland's nine starters had a hit in the game, while K.J. Hockaday, Jordan Hagel and Korey Wacker all drove in a pair of runs to help the Terps improve to 14-1 in non-conference games.
Starting pitcher David Carroll went four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two, as Maryland (15-6) built an early lead.
Etchison helped Maryland get on the board first by leading off the third inning with a single up the middle. A hit batsman, walk and another hit batsman forced in the game's first run, and Hockaday's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
In the fourth, a pair of singles by Ryan Holland and Etchison and another hit batsman loaded the bases. Wacker drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 Maryland.
George Washington pulled within a run in the sixth thanks to a two-out rally. The Colonials' Stephen Oswald drove in their first run with a RBI single, and a second straight single put runners on first and second. GW then scored two unearned runs when Holland dropped a fly ball in left field.
The Terps got a run back in the next half-inning, as Tomo Delp led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Etchison and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wacker for a 5-3 advantage.
Maryland relief pitcher Jake Stinnett then cruised through the seventh and eighth without allowing a hit and striking out three.
In the eighth, Maryland added three insurance runs that ended up being much needed. With runners on first and second after Rodriguez singled and Tim Kiene was intentionally walked, Hockaday singled up the middle to score one. Hagel followed with a two-run double to deep center field, giving Maryland a 8-3 lead heading into the ninth.
The Colonials got three runs across on reliever Bobby Ruse to make it 8-6 with one out in the ninth, but Jimmy Reed came on and recorded the last two outs by way of strikeout to earn his sixth save of the season.
Maryland reliever Charlie Haslup (1-1), who allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits in two innings of work was credited with the win. George Washington starter Luke Mirabella (0-1) gave up four runs on four hits in three innings and took the loss.
The Terps open an eight-game road swing Wednesday when they travel to take on Delaware.
