COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Brandon Lowe went 3-for-4, but the No. 20 Maryland baseball team fell 3-1 to VCU Wednesday night at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
The Terrapins (27-13, 8-4) tallied seven hits, but just one run against the Rams. Junior LaMonte Wade reached base three times and tallied a run.
VCU opened the scoring in the second. Shane Dressler reached on a one-out double off Maryland starter Taylor Bloom before advancing to third on a groundout. Daane Berezo then poked an infield single that plated Dressler.
The Rams pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the fourth. A two-out error on sophomore shortstop Patrick Hisle allowed Ryan Coale to reach before Berezo walked. After Mitchel Lacey singled to load the bases, Bloom threw a wild pitch that allowed Coale to score.
The Terps threatened in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to scratch out a run. Junior Jose Cuas drew a one-out walk before junior Anthony Papio was hit by a pitch. Subsequent fly outs from senior Tim Lewis and freshman Justin Morris ended the Maryland threat.
A Logan Farrar RBI single in the top of the eighth gave the Rams a 3-0 lead before Lowe got the Terps on the board in the bottom half of the frame. Wade walked and advanced to second on a groundout. Lowe then singled to center to plate the junior.
Lewis' one-out single in the ninth gave the Terps hope for a rally, but VCU closer Daniel Concepcion shut the door to give the Rams the victory.
Maryland returns to action this weekend at Purdue for a three-game series. Games one and two can be seen on BTN Plus ($).
