COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Lindsey Schmeiser hit a two-out double in the fifth inning, her twentieth of the season, breaking the Maryland single-season doubles record, as the Maryland softball team fell to #4 Michigan, 10-2. The accolade was previously held by Michelle Burrell with 19 in 2001.
In addition, the Terps (26-23, 8-11 Big Ten) took the field at the Maryland Softball Stadium on Saturday in front of a record 941 fans, setting a new single-game attendance record.
After a scoreless first frame, Michigan jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Maryland miscues along with a sacrifice fly put Lindsay Montemarano on third. Abby Ramirez singled in Montemarano, while Sierra Lawrence hit a two-run home run to left field.
The Wolverines added a three-spot in the top of the fourth off a Ramirez RBI single that scored Mary Sbonek from second. Sierra Romero mailed a two-run home run to center field, opening up a 6-0 Michigan lead.
In the bottom of the frame Shannon Bustillos put a solo-shot over the center field wall, her ninth of the season and twenty-seventh of her career. The home run ties the senior with L. Schmeiser and Beth Radford for the most in Maryland history.
Michigan added an additional four runs in the top of the sixth. Kelly Christner hit a RBI single that brought Lawrence home, while Kelsey Susalla put a three-run home run into right field.
In the home half, Corey Schwartz mailed a solo home run to pull the Terrapins within 10-2. The long ball marks a team leading thirteenth home run, as the junior went 2-for-3 from the plate. Bustillos also hit the ball well, going 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser (18-8) took the loss for the Terrapins, pitching three and one third inning and striking out one. Hannah Dewey and Brenna Nation also saw time from the pitcher's circle.
The two teams return to the diamond for the series finale, Sunday at 1 p.m. The team will honor its seven seniors for senior day in a pregame ceremony.
