Record Number of Terps Taken in MLB Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland baseball team saw a record eight student-athletes selected in the MLB Draft after four were taken on the final day of the 2015 edition Wednesday afternoon.

Junior third baseman Jose Cuas was selected in the 11th round (331st overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Washington Nationals drafted junior RHP Kevin Mooney in the 15th round (464th overall) while junior catcher Kevin Martir went to the Houston Astros in the 18th round (529th overall).

Junior LHP Zach Morris finished off the day for Maryland, going in the 24th round (714th overall).

We are very proud of Jose, Kevin, Zach and Kevin,” head coach John Szefc said. “They have committed themselves everyday on and off the field over their time here. We are thrilled that they have the opportunity to play professional baseball and can't wait to see what they do in the future.

Cuas was a staple at third base during his time in College Park, playing in 170 games. The Brookyn native flashed his power this season, swatting a team-high 11 home runs while tying for the team-lead in RBIs with 53.

Cuas earned second team All-Big Ten honors for his efforts.

After a record setting 2014 that saw him set the single season Maryland saves record, Mooney notched 11 saves this season to bring his career school record to 33. Mooney finished with a 1.89 ERA and was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after saving all three of the Terps' wins at the tournament.

Martir led the Terps offensively this season, finishing with a team best .342 average while nabbing 17 doubles and seven home runs. A spectacular defender behind the plate, Martir earned third team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the Los Angeles Regional All-Tournament team.

The Brookyn native was also recognized as a Johnny Bench Award semifinalist.

Morris served as a key cog in Maryland's standout bullpen, finishing with a 2.61 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 31.0 innings pitched. The Edgewater, Md., native started his career at Cincinnati before playing the last two seasons in College Park.

On Tuesday, Brandon Lowe, Alex Robinson, LaMonte Wade and Jake Drossner were all selected.

Maryland finished the season with a school record 42 wins and won its second consecutive NCAA Regional title.
