COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Kevin Smith hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the fourth and freshman RHP Hunter Parsons tossed seven innings of one-run, two hit ball as the Maryland baseball team pushed past James Madison, 5-2, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Wednesday night.
The Terrapins (15-15, 1-2 Big Ten) fell behind in the second, but score five unanswered runs to take the victory. Parsons was spectacular in his first career home start, notching career highs in innings pitched (7.0) and hits allowed (2) to grab his first career win.
Parsons' first given up was a home run off the bat of Zach Tondi in the second. That was his only blemish as the freshman sat the away team down in order on four separate occasions and tied a career high with four strikeouts.
Maryland offense came alive behind Parsons in the fourth. Sophomore Kevin Biondic stroked a single to right field before Smith powered a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left center for the third home run of his season.
The Terps tacked on another run in the sixth. Freshman Nick Dunn singled on the first pitch of the inning before advancing to second on a balk. Junior Nick Cieri then ripped a single straight back up the middle to bring home Dunn and make the score 3-1.
A Madison Nickens two-out double tacked on two more in the seventh. Redshirt freshman Andrew Bechtold singled before sophomore Justin Morris walked. That set up Nickens, who blasted a ball to right center to clear the bases.
James Madison grabbed a run back in the eighth, but junior Mike Rescigno shut the door in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
Biondic extended his reached base streak to 11 games while Costes has a hit in eight straight. Maryland has won both games in which Parsons has started this season.
Maryland is back on the field Friday night at home against Ohio State at 5:30 p.m. Action can be seen live on BTN and the Maryland Baseball Network.
