COLLEGE PARK, Md. --The Maryland wrestling team (2-1, 0-1 B1G) will travel to Palo Alto, California, to square off with Stanford (2-1, 1-0 PAC12). The match will take place outdoors at the Stanford Football Fan Fest before Stanford's football game. It is Maryland's second outdoor match of the season, previously meeting No. 12 Rutgers outdoors at High Point Solutions Stadium on Nov. 4.
Maryland will also participate in the Road Runner Open on Nov. 19 in Bakersfield, Calif. The event will be streamed on flowrestling.com.
LAST TIME OUT
Maryland swept its doubleheader against Campbell and George Mason, defeating the Camels, 20-19, and the Patriots, 28-9. Brandon Cray led the way for the Terrapins, picking up a pin in his first match against Campbell and then earning another victory against George Mason.
Three other Terps went 2-0 on the day. No. 15 Ryan Diehl, freshman Kyle Cochran and Jaron Smith all were victorious in both of their matches.
The Terps knocked off Campbell to earn their first win of the season, and then matched their 2016-17 season win total with the victory over George Mason.
A LOOK AT STANFORD
Stanford comes into its match against Maryland winners of back-to-back matches. After dropping their first dual of the season against No. 8 Virginia Tech, the Cardinal knocked off California Baptist and CSU Bakersfield in consecutive outings. They also earned a third place finish at the Hoakie Open.
The Cardinal will likely send out three wrestlers who have cracked the national rankings. No. 9 Connor Schram will wrestle at 125 pounds, No. 16 Keaton Subjeck will compete at 174 pounds, and No. 12 Nathan Butler will anchor the Stanford lineup in the heavyweight spot. This will be the second time in three-consecutive matches that Maryland will face a ranked opponent at heavyweight.
AN EXPERIENCED BUNCH
The Terps return 11 wrestlers who started last season.Headlined by three who qualified for the NCAA Tournament, Maryland returns Alex Vargas, Jhared Simmons, Adam Whitesell, Justin Alexander, Patrick Gerish, Josh Ugalde, Idris White and David-Brian Whisler.
In addition to participating in the NCAA Championships, Bannister, Diehl and Hemida all placed at the Big Ten Championships. The three placers are the most ever for Maryland since joining the Big Ten.
MCCOY ANNOUNCES 2017-18 CAPTAINS
Head coach Kerry McCoy announced that junior Youssif Hemdia and senior Justin Alexander would be team captains for the 2017-18 season.
Hemida served in the role during the 2016-17 season, while Alexander earned the honor for the first time as a Terrapin.
TERPS PLACE TWO AT U23 WORLD TRIALS
Junior Youssif Hemida and redshirt sophomore Jaron Smith both placed at the 2017 U23 World Team Trials in October.
Hemida placed 2nd and picked up an impressive win over the 2017 Maccabiah Games Champion.
Smith knocked off a number of formidable opponents en route to a 4th place finish. Over the course of the event he defeated a former Division II National Champion and a former two-time Division I NCAA All-American.
THE HEMIDA EFFECT
Junior Youssif Hemida is set to have another impactful season as a Terrapin. The Mamaroneck, N.Y., native got his season off on the right foot, winning at Rutgers and then picking up another victory at the NWCA All-Star Classic over Garrett Ryan of Columbia.
Hemida also knocked off No. 20 Jere Heino of Campbell in Maryland's win over the Camels.
The heavyweight placed 7th in the Big Ten Championships and qualified for the 2017 NCAA Championships.
He went 15-6 from January to March in his sophomore season, the most dominant stretch of his career.
TERPS TO AIR TWICE ON BTN
The Big Ten Network announced on October 10 that Maryland will be featured in two matches this upcoming season.
The Terps will take part in the network's first match of the season, a road bout against Wisconsin on Dec. 7. Maryland will then host Minnesota on BTN on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
