CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Maryland volleyball team dropped their match at No. 6 Illinois in straight sets (14-25, 14-25, 19-25) on Wednesday night.
Sophomore outside hitter Erika Pritchard led Maryland in both kills (nine) and digs (nine). Redshirt freshman middle blocker Katie Myers was a force at the net with four blocks while also recording five kills.
The Illini controlled the first set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead and never looked back. Maryland only had six kills in the set. Pritchard kept Maryland in it defensively with five digs but the Terps couldn't overcome an efficient .371 hitting mark from the Illini.
The second set was similar to the first, with Illinois demanding the frame. The Illini quickly jumped out 6-1 on a 4-0 run and pushed the lead to 19-10 and ultimately 25-14.
Myers led the Terps in their best set in the third with three blocks and three kills. Off a freshman middle blocker Rainelle Jones kill and two Illinois attack errors, Maryland led 3-1 early. Midway in the set, Myers went on a blocking spree, with three in a string of 10 points, including one to give Maryland a 15-14 lead. After Illinois tied it, Myers then secured a kill to re-give Maryland the advantage at 16-15. The Illini went on a 6-1 run to take the ultimate lead and ended up winning the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
After three on the road, Maryland will return home for a three-match home stand, beginning with Iowa on Sunday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
