Terps Pound Phoenix, 11-3

ELON, N.C. -- Marty Costes had a single, home run and three RBI as the Maryland baseball team (10-11, 0-0 B1G) beat Elon, 11-3, on Wednesday.

Costes drove in two with his single before capping off his night with a solo home run in the top half of the ninth inning.

Maryland got off to a fast start in the game, scoring a run in the top half of the first inning. Zach Jancarski led off the game with a double, and was later brought in on a sacrifice fly by Nick Dunn.

After a scoreless second, Maryland put four runs on the board to pull away from the Phoenix in the third inning. AJ Lee singled to get the scoring started, scoring Jancarski and Dunn. Lee would then advance to second on the throw home. Costes then followed up with a single of his own, scoring Kevin Biondic from third and Lee from second.

Maryland was able to put more runs on the board in the fourth. Richie Schiekofer started the inning with a walk, which was followed by a Justin Morris single. The two were then brought in following a no-out single from freshman Tommy Gardiner

The Terps kept going in the fifth, with Shiekofer singling home Costes who walked to start the inning. Taylor Wright, who reached on a single, was later able to score courtesy of a balk, making the score 9-2 in favor of the Terrapins.

Gardiner then led off Maryland's half of the sixth with a single and would later come around to score on a Biondic single into left field.

After the Phoenix tallied a run in their half of the eighth, Costes put the exclamation point on the night with his solo blast over the left field wall.

Maryland used six pitchers in the game, with the staff allowing just two earned runs. Mike Vasturia got his first career start and earned the first win of his collegiate career. Elliott Zoellner pitched a scoreless third inning and Bionic hurled two scoreless innings as well.

The scoreless outings from Vasturia and Biondic lowered each of their ERA's to below 1.00 for the season.

The Terps will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 23 when they play the first game of a three-game set against Stetson (17-3). First pitch from Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
