Terps Fall at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana scored four runs in the eighth inning to come back and defeat the Maryland baseball team, 6-5, at Bart Kaufman Field Thursday night.

The Terrapins (24-28, 9-12 Big Ten) led until that frame behind five runs on 12 hits. The game included an hour and 50 minute weather delay that began with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Maryland struck first in the second. Senior Will Watson legged out an infield single before senior Zach Jancarski smacked a two-run homer over the fence in left field. Indiana cut the lead in half on a Luke Miller home run in the bottom half of the frame.

Maryland starter Hunter Parsons was great throughout, scattering five hits over six innings and allowed a pair of runs. The right-hander, only at 77 pitches at the time of the weather delay, did not come back out to begin the bottom half of the seventh after the extended break.

The Terps offense continued to do nice things against Indiana ace Jonathan Stiever and were rewarded again in the sixth. Watson and senior Justin Morris worked walks before Taylor Wright found a hole in the right side to plate Watson. Maryland jumped on Hoosier reliever Tommy Sommer in the seventh, with AJ Lee doubling before coming home on a Marty Costes sac fly.

Maryland extended the lead to 5-2 on Wright's RBI single that plated Justin Morris in the top of the eighth. Indiana proceeded to score four off the Maryland bullpen, keyed by a Miller three-run blast with two outs. Hoosier closer Matt Lloyd shut the Terps down in the ninth to secure the win for the home team.

In the third, Nick Dunn singled to centerfield to become the 13th player in Maryland history to reach 200 career hits. Every Maryland player reached base on the day.

Maryland returns to action Saturday against Indiana at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
