Head Coach Mark Turgeon
Opening Statement:
"I'm proud of my group. They were terrific defensively for 30, maybe 25 minutes, then Wisconsin turned it on. Man were they good in the second half. We lost some shooters, made some mistakes, but in the end, they took a one-point lead and we came back and won the game which is great for a young team. And I don't think we should get caught up that we're ranked and they're not and this and that. They're a hell of a team. They've been a really good road team and in the end it's a big win for us. Anthony hit a big-time shot. We made a mistake again late defensively we were supposed to switch the ball screen and give the kid a wide open shot. The building was so loud I think it really helped us but it's a good win for us."
On if he considered fouling on the last play:
"No there wasn't. There was a consideration if he was in the lane and he was going up for the shot to foul him but we were up two and make him earn it at the line. We did talk about that but in the end, we were just going to switch ball screens and take our chances. The possession before when they called a timeout we were locked in and guarding. We didn't lock in until we absolutely had to defensively but give them credit they were terrific. They did some nice things for their shooters."
On the stretch when Maryland struggled to make a shot:
"Well we had seven assists and that shows you we were very stagnant all night. I didn't like the way we finished the first half because our defense was off the charts good and it was 18, I thought it should have been 25. We were a little bit stagnant, we never really got going there. they played a really smart game defensively and they stopped doubling and they zoned up a little bit more. We missed shots but a lot of it was us being stagnant and not moving and we play a lot through Bruno and we didn't have him. Thank God we had the big lead but we just have to get better."
On Junior Anthony Cowan Jr.'s late shots in games and if he's ever had a player as comfortable as Cowan:
"Do you remember Melo Trimble? Both of them. It's been two local kids who have done it for us. Melo used to make impossible shots so we made a mistake at about the three-minute mark when Anthony turned it over and he fell. I was telling Stix to stay low and he went into a ball screen. At the timeout we said late in the clock if we don't have anything just get out of Anthony's way and we did and those are the ones he makes and he makes them. He's terrific. He missed the layup the time before. I was mad we didn't get the rebound on the layup with the two kids in there. I thought they did a nice job boxing us out tonight. It was good to see Anthony make that shot then he kind of energized us defensively."
On playing well at the beginning and playing with a young team:
"So everybody is saying you have to start games better but I would rather finish them better, right. I mean c'mon. So now everybody is going to be saying we need to finish the games better but I just told our team after the game. Just because there's a number in front of our name now doesn't mean that we've just conquered everything. This is one heck of a league. It's a great league. There was a stretch out there for about four or five minutes in the first half where we had five freshmen on the floor. We are the fifth youngest team in division one basketball. This team is doing amazing things. It's not getting any easier. We have to go on the road, Ohio State, Michigan State the next two games. It is what it is. It's the best league in the country and just to get another one is terrific for us so I just want our guys to know that. they are doing some amazing things and it's not going to be easy and to stay confident. That was my message to them."
On the play of Freshman Ricky Lindo Jr.:
"I'll tell you what, we are really relying on Ricky a lot and I've never seen a kid grow as much defensively as he's grown in rebounding. He did a great job on Happ. Happ didn't get to play the second half either much but he did a great job on Happ in the first half. He did some amazing things getting some big-time rebounds. I think we could have boxed out better than we did but Ricky goes and gets them. I'm really proud of Ricky. When we signed him in August we were going to redshirt him so it's really cool what he's doing. He's really helping us and he's growing and our guys have a lot of confidence in him."
On what it means to win when things may not be going the right way all the time:
"Well, it's a good thing to close games so people won't talk about me. I know how it is but we've won some close games. To come from behind was big and I was kind of playing the role [in the huddle to energize them]. I was saying we were winning by 20 and that doesn't really help us and that's great for us. They're hot and we have to figure out how to stop them then we had to get a score. This is great and where we've really come a long way is at the foul line. We got to the foul line which is great that's what we started to do against Wisconsin and we made them. 22 for 25 I believe (actually 24-of-29). We were 12 for 20 at Seton Hall and missed two front and a one-and-one so we've come a long way at the foul line and that's been the difference in these close games."
Freshman Forward Ricky Lindo
On if he was surprised to get the offensive foul:
"No, I moved my feet and I knew where he was going, and I just took the charge."
On what advice Senior Ivan Bender gave him on the sideline and how did it change the way that he played:
"He just told me on the screen to keep the offensive player—force him to the half court line, stay longer and make sure my teammate gets back."
On what does it mean having him as a veteran help him along:
"He's a great leader. He's always talking, talking in the practice, in the games, on the bench. It's just good for us to have him on the team and have him on the bench supporting us."
On how a win like this where they have a big lead, lose it and come back and win different from other wins:
"Wisconsin is a good team. A couple of years ago they were in the final four. So that's a good team and they're well coached. They tested us. We were up big, lost our composure a little bit but they tested us and we just found a way to win."
On how much he has worked on his game to be a versatile defender:
"It's basically what I've been doing since high school, so it is kind of second nature, so I'm just used to it. I just had to get used to it my first couple of college games because it's a little different."
On what they did as a team better to come out and start the game more poised:
"We were just focused. The past couple of games we were starting slow, so we just wanted to make sure that we started strong and not go down big or dig ourselves in a whole. So, we just made sure we were focused and ready."
On what the plan was defensively on the last play and what went wrong:
"Just miscommunication. We were supposed to switch, and we stayed on Trice I think and luckily for us, he missed the shot."
On if they can feel themselves playing different when they start to lose a lead in a game like this:
"Yeah, you definitely play a little different. You loosen up a little bit. You don't have much of a tight grip when you have a big lead like that. It's just a matter of us staying focused and keep playing hard."

Junior Guard Anthony Cowan Jr.
On if he remembers watching Melo Trimble hitting the three against Wisconsin:
"Yeah I remember. I was in the basement with my dad. I was like 'knock down,' as soon as it left his hands."
On if he had the same feeling as soon as he let the ball go in his similar situation:
"Yeah. For sure. My coaches had confidence in me, my coaches did as well. I was confident in myself to be able to make the shot."
On what was going through his head with about eight seconds left on the shot clock:
"It wasn't like it was my first time with the ball at eight seconds. But just make a play. I knew we were down one and I saw the defender kind of sagging off a little bit, so I just pulled up."
On if he thinks this game where they had a big lead, lost it and then came back can have an even better effect than maybe other wins:
"Yeah. Coach Turgeon definitely said that we needed this just to get better coming down the stretch. We are getting a lot better and we're getting a lot confidence, so some games we're going to have leads early so we just have to learn now how to maintain them."
On what it is like mentally when he's out there and sees the lead slowly slipping away:
"It's the worst feeling. It just feels like a play just needs to be made but it's also like you really don't want to make a play because you just want the time to hurry up and go by. I guess it was just one of those nights—credit to Wisconsin, they just got hit and hit big shots. But lucky for us, they were able to miss one late for us, so that helped us."
On what were they executing differently in the second half and how frustrating was it:
"It was super frustrating because we felt like we were there on the catches, but like you said we just gave them confidence and they were able to hit shots so that was on us."
Sophomore G Darryl Morsell
On how devastating would it had been if they lost the game after a 20-point lead:
"I feel like we can build off of every game regardless of if we win or lose. The second half didn't go how we wanted it to. We didn't have Bruno most of the second half because of foul trouble. But we found a way to win and we just continue to find a way to win. Wisconsin is a phenomenal team. They came out the second half hitting shots. I think we just made plays at the end and just found a way to win."
On what it is about Anthony and the shot clock, that it seems to be his best three-point shot:
"He's just confident. That's all. That's 100 percent of Anthony's game. He's the most confident player on the court at all times. Whenever the ball is in his hands at the end of the shot clock, the whole team believes in him so that just gives him that extra confidence to make the shot."
