#9 Maryland Plays at #17 Michigan State Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The ninth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (15-1, 4-1 B1G) will take on No. 17 Michigan State (12-4, 2-3) Thursday in East Lansing. The Terps and the Spartans will tip-off at 6 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.

Freshman Shakira Austin earned her fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor Monday and was named USBWA National Freshman of the Week Tuesday. Fellow Terp rookie Taylor Mikesell was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll.

Austin, a 6-5 forward, averaged 10.0 points, 12.5 rebounds, 4.0 blocks in just her fourth and fifth career games in conference play.

Mikesell led Maryland with 16.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds per game in two wins last week. She shot 52 percent from the field and 47 percent from outside the arc with seven threes made.

The Terps used an 18-4 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to beat Michigan, 83-69, Saturday in College Park. Mikesell had 17 points and Austin had 13 with 15 boards and seven blocks. Junior Blair Watson added 14 points and six boards. With the win, the Terrapins have won three straight games.

Thursday's matchup is the 13th meeting all-time between Maryland and Michigan State and Maryland owns the series, 11-1. All are under Frese. They split their meetings last year. The Spartans won 82-68 in College Park on Jan. 11, then the Terps won in East Lansing, 76-68, on Feb. 8.

Maryland is No. 6 in the country and leads the Big Ten in rebounding margin (+12.5). The Terps are No. 8 nationally in rebounds with 45.8 per game and No. 4 in defensive rebounds per game (31.0).

Mikesell leads the Big Ten with 50 threes made. Sophomore Channise Lewis leads the league in assists with 5.6. Austin is No. 5 in the country in total blocks (48) and needs five to break the Maryland freshman blocks record. She is third in the Big Ten in rebounds (11.3). Junior Kaila Charles is fifth in the league in scoring (16.6).

After Thursday's matchup, the Terrapins will host Penn State (9-7, 2-3) at the XFINITY Center Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup.
