COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland completed its biggest comeback of the season, beating Indiana in five sets Wednesday night in the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Terps fell behind 2-0 after dropping the first two sets, but rallied back and won the next three, completing the reverse sweep. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Katie Myers had the best night of her career, leading the team and posting a career-best 21 kills while also adding two service aces and seven blocks.
"Being down 0-2, I thought it was nice to get a five-set win at home," Head Coach
Adam Hughes said. "We didn't really panic after the first two sets. We made a few adjustments, and we were able to match Indiana's intensity."
Sophomore libero
Allegra Rivas also had a breakout match, tying her career high with 32 digs, leading Maryland's shutdown defense which held the Hoosiers hitting to just over .100 (.105).
"She was really good defensively," Hughes said. "She's been really smart about making the right choice… She's put a lot of work in so I'm glad she's seeing the results."
The Terps now stand at 11-8, earning their second-consecutive Big Ten win and third overall.
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter
Jada Gardner also had the best match of her season, tallying a season-high 13 kills while also leading the team with seven blocks. Junior setter
Nicole Alford led the team with 30 assists, the most assists by any Maryland player all season.
SET-BY-SET
- SET ONE (IU, 27-25) Despite going back-and-forth for most of the set, the Terps pulled away with a 5-0 run to go up 21-17. However, Indiana battled back and took the set into extra points and a Maryland service error gave the Hoosiers the first set win.
- SET TWO (IU, 25-23) The Terps had a late lead again in the second set after another back-and-forth affair, but Indiana put the pressure on late and forced Maryland errors, securing another set win.
- SET THREE (UMD, 25-22) Maryland and Indiana went point-for-point again in the third set with neither team making any extended runs or shifting the momentum, but Maryland would fend off the three-set sweep and secure the third-set win on a Indiana attack error.
- SET FOUR (UMD, 25-20) The Terps were controlling in the fourth, giving up the first point of the set but never trailing after as Maryland led by as much as seven points in the set. Indiana applied some pressure late, but Maryland would force a fifth set on a Jada Gardner kill to put the set away.
- SET FIVE (UMD, 15-12) Just like the rest of the match, set five was closely contested. In a classic first to 15 race, the Terps came out ahead. Trailing 11-12, the Terps scored four unanswered points to earn its 11th win of the season.
