
Akli Finds Singles Success on Day One in Alabama

Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The Maryland's women's tennis team began play in the Roberta Allison Fall Classic on Friday. T
he Terps brought freshman Ayana Akli and junior Eva Alexandrova down to Alabama, where the pair started the day off with doubles play. Akli and Alexandrova competed against Aran Teixido Garcia and Katherine Cao of Memphis, putting up a tough battle but eventually falling 6-2. The pair will continue play in the consolation bracket against Melissa Pick and Anna Makarova of Wisconsin on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Akli proved to be the star player for the Terps, first reigning victorious after knocking off Emma Antonaki, the No. 41 player in the country from Mississippi State in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. She continued her winning streak against Isolde de Jong of Ole Miss, finishing 6-2, 6-2.
Akli will play in the semifinals against Anna Vrbenska of Ole Miss on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
