Terps Shutout Hawks, 4-0, in NCAA First Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  –  The Maryland field hockey squad (17-3) scored four goals in the second half to beat Saint Joseph's, 4-0, Friday afternoon in the NCAA First Round at the University of Virginia Turf Field.

Junior co-captain Bodil Keus scored two of the Terps' four goals and helped anchor the defense, which held the Hawks (17-4) scoreless for the first time this year. Coming into Friday's match, Saint Joseph's led the nation in goals per game (4.00).

With the win, Maryland moves on to face third-seeded Virginia (17-4) Sunday at 1 p.m. in the NCAA Quarterfinals. This is the Terps' 24th appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals in the last 25 years.

"We wanted to manage their key players. Noelle Frost and Bodil kept us in it to start," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Our corner defense was really good. This was just all-around a great match and we look forward to playing UVA Sunday after a great battle in College Park earlier this year."

The teams were scoreless at halftime, then Brooke DeBerdine scored her first goal of the year just 61 seconds into the third quarter to get the Terrapins' offense rolling. She tapped in a loose ball shot from Mayv Clune to put the Terps on the board.

Just under 10 minutes later, Keus scored her first goal of the day when she banged in a shot off a penalty corner to make it a two-goal lead with 4:25 left in the third quarter.

She struck again 6:35 into the fourth quarter when she tucked in a shot just under the crossbar off another penalty corner to make it 3-0.

Clune finalized the score at 4-0 with 3:26 to play when she sent in a shot between the Hawks' goalkeeper's feet on a one-on-one opportunity.

Maryland outshot Saint Joseph's 14-11 and goalkeeper Noelle Frost made six saves. The Hawks had eight penalty corners to four for the Terps.

Maryland beat Virginia, 3-2, in a shootout victory in College Park on Sept. 13 earier this year. Kyler Greenwalt and Emma DeBerdine both scored to tie the game twice in regulation, then Bibi Donraadt buried the Terps' final shootout chance for the go-ahead score. Frost stopped three of six Virginia shootout chances to seal the win.
