BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Maryland volleyball team came from behind and beat Indiana in five sets for the second time this season on Friday night in Bloomington, Ind. The Terps fell behind 2-0 after dropping the first two sets, but rallied back and won the next three to complete the reverse sweep in strikingly similar fashion as the last time the teams met.
"That fifth set really created some situations where both teams needed to execute under pressure," Head Coach Adam Hughes said. "We stayed composed, and people stepped up to make some plays. I'm really proud of the group tonight."
Maryland's thrilling come-from-behind victory was punctuated by additional points in the fifth set as the Terps saved seven Indiana match points en route to a 23-21 fifth set win.
Erika Pritchard led the offensive attack for the Terps, leading the team with 16 kills, while Rainelle Jones tied her career-high with 14 kills on the evening.
Katie Myers was also a force on the court, tying Rainelle Jones for the team lead with seven blocks while also contributing nine kills. Jada Gardner added eight of Maryland's 59 kills in the match, while Rebekah Rath contributed nine. Allegra Rivas took the brunt of the work defensively, leading the team with 17 digs, while Nicole Alford shined in the pass game with a season-high 50 assists.
The Terps now stand at 13-14 overall and 5-10 in the Big Ten.
SET-BY-SET
- SET ONE (IU, 25-18) Maryland was locked into a tightly-contested first set before giving up a four-point Indiana run to make it 15-9 and later an unanswered six-point run which clinched the set for the Hoosiers.
- SET TWO (IU, 25-18) The Terps fell behind 14-9 and were never able to regain the lead in the second set as Indiana used a 10-3 run to overpower Maryland in the second and come within one set win from winning the match.
- SET THREE (UMD, 25-22) Maryland fell behind 7-2 and seemed all but destined for a three-set loss, but the scene was eerily similar to Maryland's five-set win over Indiana earlier in the season in which the Terps also fell behind two sets to none. The Terps stormed back and used a five-point swing fueled by Rebekah Rath to win the set.
- SET FOUR (UMD, 25-20) Despite a back-and-forth affair in the fourth, Maryland again won the battle of streaks, using another unanswered five-point run to clinch the fourth set which forced the fifth set tiebreaker.
- SET FIVE (UMD, 23-21) Though normally played to 15 points, the marathon fifth set featured eight match points, culminating in Maryland's 23, and near-endless drama in front of an announced 1,815 fans in the recently opened Wilkinson Hall. Erika Pritchard battled off the first match point at 14-13, and Maryland weathered off six more Hoosier match points before ultimately winning 23-21 on a combo block from Katie Myers and Nicole Alford.
