RALEIGH, N.C. – Danny Bertoni was Maryland's lone placer at the Wolfpack Open in Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday. Bertoni turned in a 4-1 performance on the day at 141 pounds, winning four straight on his way to the championship match.
The junior from Jefferson, Md. opened his day in dominant fashion, earning a 9-0 major dec. over William Davidson of Truett-McConnell University. Bertoni followed it up with a 3-2 dec. over Appalachian State's Anthony Brito and a 8-1 dec. over NC State's Alex Urquiza. Bertoni kept his momentum rolling with an 11-1 major dec. over Newberry's Isiah Royal to advance to the championship match, where he would drop a 12-2 major dec. to NC State's Tariq Wilson.
Jonathan Spadafora impressed at 165, earning a pin of Limestone's Hunter Haven in 3:50 to open the day, but dropping his next match to William Formato (Appalachian State) by a 4-2 dec. to drop into the consolation bracket. The freshman from Dix Hills, N.Y. was unfazed and rattled off back to back pins of Shylik Scriven (Spartanburg Methodist) in 2:15 and Nick Giantonio (Newberry) in 3:16 before earning a 7-2 dec. over Justin Phillips (UVA) to advance to the consolation round of four, where he would lose via fall to Kellen Ekern (Old Dominion).
Maryland will be back in action in an open tournament at the Mat-Town Open in Lock Haven, Pa. on December 1, while dual competition resumes December 6 when Maryland makes the short trip to Annapolis to face Navy. For full results from the Wolfpack Open, see below.
