COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â The No. 7 Maryland men's basketball team looks to rack up its second victory in its opening week of action as it hosts Rhode Island at 9:00 pm Saturday evening in College Park. The Terps notched a home-opener victory for the 43rd consecutive year Tuesday against Holy Cross.
STORYLINES
• The Terrapins open the season ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press preseason poll and No. 8 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It marks the 14th time in program history Maryland has opened the season ranked top-10 in the preseason polls. Maryland is also one of just two schools in the country (Louisville) with a top-10 men's and women's basketball program.
• Maryland is 3-1 all-time against Rhode Island in a series that dates back to 1940. The Terps have won three straight meetings, including an 86-63 victory in the most recent matchup in the championship game of the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 26, 2015. Melo Trimble scored 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting.
• The Terrapins opened the season with an emphatic 95-71 victory over Holy Cross Tues., Nov. 5. Maryland had four scorers in double-figures, led by sophomore
Jalen Smith's double-double debut (16 pts, 11 rebs). Maryland took 76 shots in the victory - its most in a regulation game in the
Mark Turgeon era. It was the most since the Terps shot 76 times in a 91-70 victory over Wake Forest on Feb. 2, 2010.
• Maryland is 46-6 in non-conference home games at the XFINITY Center in the past six seasons. The Terps are 31-6 overall at home over the last two seasons.
• The Terrapins return 7-of-8 rotation players from last season's NCAA Round of 32 team, including 83-percent of their minutes and 80-percent of their scoring. Among the returners are senior guard
Anthony Cowan Jr., who has led the team in points, assists, steals and minutes the last two seasons, and sophomore forward
Jalen Smith. Both were selected to the preseason All-Big Ten team.
• Maryland has the tallest team in the Big Ten Conference, posting an average height of 6-8. Iowa ranks second (also 6-8 but slightly shorter), while the majority of the conference is an average of 6-7. The Terps are bolstered by a tall freshman class that includes
Chol Marial (7-2), Makhel &
Makhi Mitchell (6-10),
Donta Scott (6-7) and
Hakim Hart (6-6).
