Hatters Top Terps

DELAND, Fla. – Freshman Maxwell Costes had three hits and five RBIs, but the Maryland baseball team lost a back-and-forth affair with Stetson, 12-7, at Melching Field Friday night.

The Terrapins (8-5) got two hits and three runs scored from sophomore Chris Alleyne. Stetson took advantage of three Maryland errors and seven walks to get the win.

Maryland took the lead in the top half of the first. Alleyne led off the ballgame with a single before Randy Bednar walked. After Taylor Wright executed a sac bunt, Costes hit a single up the middle to plate two.

The Terps' lead was short-lived as Stetson took advantage of some Maryland defensive miscues and struck back for three unearned runs off Maryland starter Zach Thompson.

The Alleyne-Bednar combo helped the Terps square up the contest in the third. Alleyne doubled to start the inning before scampering to third on a wild pitch. Bednar then hit a sac fly to left field to make it 3-3.

The Hatters chased Thompson with a run in the fifth before grabbing two more in the sixth. Maryland struck back in the top half of the seventh. Sophomore Tommy Gardiner singled up the middle before Benjamin Cowles singled as well. After freshman Kody Milton walked to load the bases, Alleyne grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Gardiner.

After Bednar struck out swinging, Wright walked before Costes doubled into the gap in left-center field to clear the bases give the Terps the lead.

Stetson poured it on, scoring six runs over the last two frames to take the game, 12-7.

The Terps and Hatters will play game three of their series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the action on ESPN+ or listen on the Maryland Baseball Network.
