CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Maryland baseball team won game two of a doubleheader 8-4 to take the series of Illinois at Illinois Field Saturday afternoon.
The Terrapins (15-15, 3-3 Big Ten) dropped game one of the doubleheader to Illinois (20-10, 1-5 Big Ten), 5-1, before coming back to win game two. It's Maryland's first series win over Illinois since entering the Big Ten.
Game Two: Maryland 8, Illinois 4
What To Know
- Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the third. Senior AJ Lee's bunt single scored Justin Vought before Bednar hit a three-run homer.
- Illinois plated a run in the fourth and then three in the sixth to tie it. Trevor LaBonte allowed all four of those runs over his five and a third innings of work, but all three runs in the sixth were unearned after two Maryland errors.
- Maryland retook control with a four-run seventh. Bednar got his fourth RBI of the day with a single before Maxwell Costes hit a three-run homer to left-center.
- Freshman left-hander Andrew Vail and sophomore lefty Sean Fisher combined to close out the game. Fisher had his best outing as a Terrapin, tossing two and two thirds innings on 28 pitches, eight of which were strikes.
Game One: Illinois 5, Maryland 1
What To Know
- Illinois evened the series, scoring five runs on eight hits. Maryland starter Zach Thompson went seven innings and five up four earned runs.
- The Illini struck first in the fifth. Jacob Campbell ended up with the first three Illinois RBIs after he hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
- Freshman DH Josh Maguire hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot, in the eighth, but Illinois put the game away with two in the bottom half.
Notes
- Maryland is now 9-6 on the road this season, that nine-win mark represents the most road wins of any team in the Big Ten.
- AJ Lee had a hit in all three games this weekend and is now riding a five-game hitting streak, a team high.
- Randy Bednar's multi-hit game gave him 10, most on the team. He and Maxwell Costes' multi-RBI games gave them six and five, respectively, for the season.
Looking Ahead
Maryland faces off with William & Mary Tuesday and West Virginia Wednesday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, both games begin at 4 p.m. Maryland will then travel to face Northwestern in the three-game series. All five games can be heard on the Maryland Baseball Network.
