Terps Fall in Sunday Rubber Game With Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota (24-24, 13-8 Big Ten) took down the Maryland baseball team (24-27, 9-12), 2-1, at Siebert Field Sunday afternoon.

What to Know

  • Two Minnesota runs in the fourth were all the Gophers would need in a victory that won the three-game series for the home team. The Terps attempted to rally in the ninth, scoring one run and putting the go-ahead run on base, but could not extend the game.
  • Junior left-hander Tyler Blohm started the game and was solid, going three and a third innings and allowing just one earned run while scattering four hits. Trevor LaBonte took over and retired the last 13 batters he faced in the game.
  • The Terps could get nothing going off Minnesota starter Joshua Culliver early, but go him into trouble in the sixth with a leadoff Chris Alleyne double. However, Alleyne ran himself out of the inning trying to advance to third on a wild pitch and the Terps could not plate Benjamin Cowles who had been hit by a pitch after Alleyne's double.
  • Sophomore Randy Bednar led off the ninth with a solo home run to make it 2-1, before Taylor Wright doubled and Maxwell Costes was hit by a pitch. That was as close was Maryland would come as Michael Pineiro and Justin Vought struck out before Josh Maguire grounded out to short to end the game.
  • Much credit to LaBonte, who kept the Terps in the game. The freshman righty gave up one hit and struck out four over a fantastic four and two thirds innings pitched.

Other Stuff

  • Maxwell Costes was hit by a pitch and has now been plunked a Big Ten high 19 times.
  • A huge shout out to the moms of Maryland Baseball on this Mother's Day. This group of players, coaches and support staff would not be here without the love and support of the moms in our lives. Win or lose, that never changes.
  • Justin Vought wore pink catchers gear in honor of Mother's Day.
