HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Maryland wrestling team closed out the 40th-annual Virginia Duals on Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum, losing its matches to Rider, Kent State, and Old Dominion after beating Fresno State in the opening round Friday. Maryland finished sixth in the eight-team field.
Kyle Cochran went a perfect 4-0 in the two-day tournament, earning a 8-0 major decision over Old Dominion's Shane Jones and three more decision victories.
Hunter Baxter picked up two wins on the day, earning his second and third dual victories this season. The redshirt sophomore took down Kent State's Ian Senz with a 5-2 decision and earned a 6-4 decision over Old Dominion's Yarhoski Aldiva.
184-pounder Kyle Jasenski also nabbed two wins on the day, beating Rider's George Walton with a 3-1 decision and Kent State's Shane Mast via a 7-3 decision.
King Sandoval – despite going 1-2 on the day – hit his signature cement mixer for his second fall of the tournament when he pinned Old Dominion's Shannon Hanna seconds into the second period of their bout. He also pinned Fresno State's Gary Joint in the first round of the tournament.
Lucas Cordio got his second start in a dual meet this season vs. Kent State and took advantage of his opportunity, wasting no time and pinning Conan Becker just 2:09 into the first period. The redshirt freshman would finish the day 1-1.
Up next, the Terps get back to Big Ten competition Friday, January 17 when they travel to Ann Arbor for a dual vs. Michigan. For full results from the second day of the Virginia Duals, see below.
