COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland wrestling team honored Niko Cappello, Brandon Cray, Jahi Jones, Peter Tedesco, and Josh Ugalde for senior day on Sunday in the XFINITY Center Pavilion, but the team would lose its final dual of the season, 22-16 to Rider.

They Said It

Alex Clemsen on the team's fight today: "I was really proud of the seniors. The three [seniors] that got to wrestle today really wrestled hard... Happy for those guys that they were able to put on a good show and walk out of the Pavilion one last time with their heads held high. We never focus on wins and losses, and I think today that really showed with our seniors, saying that if I'm going to go down, I'm going to go down swinging. And that's really all you can ask for."

What to Know

• Cappello, Cray, Jones, Tedesco, and Ugalde were honored with their parents as part of a pre-match senior night ceremony.
• Cray, Tedesco, and Ugalde were all able to wrestle on their senior night. Tedesco wrestled his first match of the season.
• Though none of the seniors won on senior night, they all wrestled in tight matches that were decided by four points or less.
• Lucas Cordio got Maryland's first win of the night with a fall over Travis Layton in the third period (5:51). Cordio's pin was his third of the season, which ranks tied for fifth on the team.
• Kyle Cochran followed up Cordio's win with a win of his own, earning an 11-2 major decision over Joe Casey at 165 pounds. Cochran now ranks first on the team with seven major decision victories on the season.
• Ugalde wrestled a hard-fought match at 174 pounds but dropped a 7-4 decision to Dean Sherry.
• Jaron Smith received a forfeit at 197 pounds, getting six team points on the board to cut the deficit to two. Smith improves to 12-7 on the season.
