COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Jaron Smith and Kyle Cochran earned wins vs. Illinois on Sunday in the XFINITY Center Pavilion but the Illini would win their fifth straight and take the match, 31-9.
Maryland started at a weight that wasn't 125 pounds for the first time this season, opening the dual at 174 pounds with Philip Spadafora against David Riojas. Spadafora dropped a tough-fought 10-5 decision, one of five decisions on the afternoon.
Though four of Illinois' nationally-ranked wrestlers appeared in the probable lineup, only two made an appearance on the mat in the Pavilion. No. 15 Zac Braunagel earned a 22-5 technical fall over Kyle Jasenski at 184 pounds and No. 7 Travis Piotrowski won a hard-fought 4-0 decision over King Sandoval at 133 pounds.
Jaron Smith got the Terps' first win of the day with a 6-5 decision over Matt Wroblewski at 197 pounds, but Maryland would go on to drop the next six bouts before Kyle Cochran won via forfeit to put six more points on the board.
Next, Maryland wraps up its Big Ten regular season with a dual vs. Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 16 in the XFINITY Center main arena. The match will also feature the gymnastics team in a "Beauty and the Beast" format.
