COLLEGE PARK, MD - The fifth-ranked Maryland field hockey squad (13-6) will take on No. 13 Virginia (12-8) Friday in the NCAA Tournament First Round at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. No. 4 Penn State (14-5) and No. 10 Syracuse (13-5) will play in the first game Friday at noon. The winners of Friday's games will advance to the Quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m.

2021-22 STORYLINES

Right here, right now
  • This is Maryland's 33rd NCAA Tournament appearance. The Terps own a record of 64-24 (.727), which is the highest winning percentage in tournament history. Under head coach Missy Meharg owns a record of 60-23 (.723) in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Terrapins have advanced to 19 Final Fours and have won eight NCAA titles (1987, 1993, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011).
  • Maryland dropped a tight, one-goal match to Penn State, 3-2, Thursday in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. The Terrapins led twice, but a fourth quarter goal by the Nittany Lions was the difference. Senior Bibi Donraadt was named to the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
  • The Terrapins have a variety of weapons. Fourteen Terps have found the goal cage, led by Bibi Donraadt with 11 goals and six assists this season. Hope Rose has nine goals and Emma DeBerdine and Margot Lawn each have five.
  • The Terps return 18 letterwinners from their 2020-21 squad, including All-Americans Brooke DeBerdine and Riley Donnelly. The Terps welcome five newcomers - Carly Hynd, Paige Kieft, Kylee Niswonger and US National Team players Julianna Tornetta and Hope Rose.
  • Senior Riley Donnelly, junior Emma DeBerdine and freshman Hope Rose won bronze with the US Under-21 Team in the Junior Pan American Cup in Santiago, Chile in August. Rose was named MVP of the event.
  • The Terrapins went 8-7 in the 2020 season (played in the spring of 2021). The Terps closed the regular season with a series sweep of No. 6 Rutgers.

Preseason honors 
  • Fifth-year seniors Brooke DeBerdine and Julianna Tornetta and freshman Hope Rose of the Maryland field hockey squad were named to the Big Ten's Players to Watch List.
  • All three Terrapins were named to the US National Team roster this summer, along with former Terps Linnea Gonzales, Kelee Lepage and Carrie Hanks.
  • DeBerdine, who earned NFHCA All-America honors this past spring, was voted team captain for the second straight season. She also earned First Team All-Big Ten honors this past spring.
  • Tornetta, a graduate transfer from Princeton, and Rose are newcomers to the Terrapins' roster. Tornetta earned NFHCA All-America honors at Princeton in the 2019 and 2018 seasons. She helped the Tigers to back-to-back Final Four appearances and an appearance in the national title game. She tallied 18 goals and 33 assists in her career as a Tiger.
  • Rose, an incoming freshman from Dauphin, Pa., earned MAX Field Hockey All-America honors. She scored 233 career goals in her high school career.

  • Fifth-year seniors Brooke DeBerdine and Kyler Greenwalt of the Maryland field hockey squad were voted team captain and vice captain, respectively, by their teammates for the fall 2021 season.
  • DeBerdine, who earned NFHCA All-America honors this past spring, served as the team's captain for the spring 2021 season.
  • Greenwalt earned back-to-back Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards in the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

  • Voted National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times, head coach Missy Meharg has exemplified the tradition of excellence Maryland field hockey has become known for, a program with eight National Championships, 18 Final Fours and 26 conference championships - solidifying the Terrapins' position among the top programs in the nation.
  • Now in her 34th season, Meharg has earned a record of 603-155-9 (.792). She has more wins than any coach at Maryland in any sport.

  • Maryland is ranked No. 5 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll released Nov. 9. The Terrapins have been ranked in the top 5 in 195 of 240 polls, dating back to 1999 and every NFHCA Coaches poll, dating back to 1999.

  • The Terps are 148-54-3 (.729) all-time against Big Ten opponents.
  • Head coach Missy Meharg is 130-34-1 (.791) vs. Big Ten opponents in her 34 years at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program.

SERIES HISTORY
  • No. 13 Virginia is 12-8 overall. Last week, the Cavaliers advanced to the ACC Championship game, where they lost to North Carolina, 1-0. Amber Ezechiels is leading Virginia with seven goals this season.
  • Maryland 43-22-2 all-time vs. the Cavaliers. The Terrapins won at Virginia, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 7 earlier this year. Virginia scored the first goal of the game with 4:43 to play. Just over a minute later, Kyler Greenwalt scored the equalizer off a penalty corner. Hope Rose scored the game-winner in the 70th minute.
  • The Terps are 0-2 all-time vs. UVA in the NCAA Tournament. Most recently, Maryland fell at Virginia, 1-0, in overtime in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Nov. 17, 2019.
