COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland wrestling team won back-to-back duals for the first time since 2017 as it defeated the Drexel Dragons, 21-19, and the Duke Blue Devils, 23-17, on Saturday afternoon at the XFINITY Center pavilion. The Terps (2-2) used consecutive comebacks sparked by 184-pounder
Kyle Cochran to take both duals late and come away with the two victories.
After Cochran and 197-pounder
Jaron Smith secured victories that brought Maryland within two, the No. 33 ranked heavyweight
Zach Schrader used seven takedowns to crush his opponent and take a major victory, giving Maryland four more team points, good enough for the win over the Dragons.Â
In the following dual against Duke, the Terps found itself down 17-12 with three bouts left and it was once again the trio of Cochran, Smith, and Schrader that led the comeback as Cochran and Smith earned bonus points with major wins to put Maryland up 20-17, and SchraderÂ
The 133-pound Sandoval secured his first dual win of the season as he quickly threw Drexel's Deon Pleasant to his back and wore him down long enough to get the pin. He followed that up with a pin over Duke's Drake Doolittle.Â
141-pounder
Danny Bertoni also won both of his matches on the day.
