Terps Beat Rutgers 9-5, Split Weekend Series

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Rutgers, 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Freshman right-hander Jason Savacool got the start on the mound and earned the win for the Terps, while Maryland's top half of the batting order was exceptional in the fourth game of the four-game series.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland came back from trailing 2-1 in the series and was able to salvage a weekend split with Rutgers on Sunday.
  • Savacool gave the Terps a solid start, allowing five runs and striking out six in five and two thirds innings of work. Most of the damage came in the sixth as the Scarlet Knights put up their only crooked number of the afternoon, getting three runs off the freshman.
  • Maryland's top four went 7-for-15 on the afternoon with six RBI, seven runs scored, and four walks. Chris Alleyne went 1-for-3, Matthew Shaw played his best game as a Terp and went 2-for-4, Randy Bednar bounced back from Saturday and went 2-for-4, and Bobby Zmarzlak went 2-for-4 while driving in three runs.
  • Rutgers struck in the first inning on a RBI fielder's choice off Savacool. Maryland instantly responsed by plating three in the bottom half off starter Jayson Hoopes, then scored another three in the second.
  • Though Benjamin Cowles didn't homer like he did in all three prior games, the junior shortstop played exceptional defense and was able to drive in runs on a pair of sacrifice flies.
  • Maryland scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as Matt Shaw and Randy Bednar hit home runs in back-to-back fashion. Shaw's was the first of his career, while Bednar's was his first of the season.
  • Sophomore southpaw Ryan Ramsey was tremendous out of the bullpen for the second-consecutive game. After striking out the side on 10 pitches in his lone inning of work last night, the Montvale, N.J. native shoved for three innings of relief this afternoon - allowing just a pair of hits and racking up three strikeouts.
  • While Ramsey continued to put up zeros, the Maryland offensive attack was weathered by Tevin Murray and Eric Reardon out of the Rutgers 'pen in the late innings to keep the game within reach. Ramsey dominated the Scarlet Knights lineup and handed the ball off to Sam Bello to record the final out after allowing two to reach base safely in the ninth. Bello slammed the door and Maryland secured its third win of the season.
