Maryland Falls to Penn State, 6-5

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The University of Maryland baseball team fell to Penn State, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Penn State evened the series at 1-1 as the two teams are set to play a rubber game on Monday at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

What You Should Know
  • The Terps had a much quieter game at the plate compared to the night before, scoring just five times on 10 hits.
  • Defensively, Maryland had its cleanest game of the season. The Terps didn't commit a single error for the first time this year.
  • Junior preseason All-American Maxwell Costes made his return to the diamond, pinch hitting in the seventh and playing the remainder of the game at first base. The Baltimore native went 1-for-2 at the plate.
  • Sophomore right-hander Connor Staine was steady on the mound in his third start of the year. The New Jersey native tossed five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out four Nittany Lions and walked two. Staine worked himself out of some jams in the early innings, leaving runners stranded in scoring position in the first and second.
  • Maryland started the first inning off with the lead much like the Terps did the day before, this time tallying a single run in the top of the first. Chris Alleyne singled to lead off the game, stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Randy Bednar - who improves to 4-for-8 on the weekend - drove in Alleyne for the first run of the game.
  • A Bobby Zmarzlak two-run shot - his second of the season - gave the Terps a three-run lead in the fourth.
  • Penn State responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double to make it a one-run game. The Nittany Lions would then tie it up in the following inning with a solo homer off Staine.
  • Maryland went to senior southpaw Sean Fisher out of the bullpen, who tossed a clean sixth before allowing a run in the seventh and another in the eighth.
  • The Terps rallied late, fighting back from a two-run deficit and tying the game with RBI base knocks from Alleyne and freshman Matthew Shaw in the top of the ninth.
  • Penn State loaded the bases in the bottom half of the ninth and delivered the walk-off RBI single to win the game and tie the series.
