View From The Box
- The Terrapins put together a steady 90 minutes in Evanston, controlling the play for the majority of the contest. The Terps have now won four straight Big Ten matches for the first time since 2016.
- The first half saw Maryland assert themselves as the better side. Senior Paul Bin had a pair of chances, but was unable to take advantage. Maryland's back line was untroubled in the first half.
- The Terps did their damage in the eight minutes to start the second half. In the 48th minute, senior Mike Heitzmann sent in a corner that fell to the feet of Bender. The Parkville, Md. native settled it with his left foot and volleyed it into the back of the net for his first goal as a Terp.
- Johnston made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute. A quick cut inside from Bin moved the Northwestern defense and freed up Johnston at the top of the 18-yard box. The sophomore received the ball from Bin and lashed it home for his first tally of the year.
- Northwestern found their feet in the final 12 minutes and got a goal back through Rom Brown in the 82nd minute. The Terps were able to see out the rest of the match to secure the win.
- A note of respect for longtime Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan, who coached his final match at home for the Wildcats. Big Ten soccer is better off because of the contributions of the affable Wildcat boss.
From The Boss
"I'm delighted with the victory and the performance of our team today. We started very brightly and had control the whole first half. At halftime we talked about having a little more malice in our attack, and we did that in the start of the second half. It was awesome to see
Ben Bender score his first goal, he's been close so many times. Our guys did the job. We got the three points and I am delighted."
