VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A late fourth quarter goal lifted Northwestern past Maryland, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the Terrapins' final game at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
"I'm super proud of the way Maryland played," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Our tactics were spot on, we played a very good brand of hockey. We played very tough. We have to take the risks and continue growing together and working on our new backfield. Today, Bibi Donraadt gave us so much in the midfield and a beautiful open goal."
The Wildcats got on the board in the second quarter when Ana Medina Garcia deflected in a shot off a penalty corner in in the 24h minute.
Bibi Donraadt notched her first goal of the season when she scored the equalizer for Maryland (2-2) 4:24 into the third quarter when she sent in a shot from the right side from 10 yards out.
The Maryland defense held strong with three third quarter saves and one in the fourth. Northwestern (3-1) took the lead with 6:16 left to play when Bente Baekers took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity for the look.
Maryland took eight shots to Northwestern's 17. Each team had five penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost made seven stops in the match.
Next, Maryland will take on Penn State (1-1) for two games next weekend in State College. The Terps and the Nittany Lions will play Friday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Links to watch and to follow live stats will be posted on umterps.com.
