- In a hard fought battle between two of the best programs in men's college soccer, two goals from Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Victor Bezerra proved to be the different as the top-seeded Hoosiers overcame the fourth-seeded Terps.
- The opening 45 minutes was even, with both teams notching decent chances. The best for the Terps came in the 24th minute on a quick counter attack that saw Brayan Padilla drive at the center of the Indiana defense before laying the ball off to Eric Matzelevich in the left channel. The Terps senior forward tried to curl his right-footed effort into the near post, but the shot went wide.
- The defining minutes of the match came in the first 10 of the second half. In the 47th minute, Bezerra expertly finished a cross to the near post to make it 1-0. Nine minutes later, Bezerra scored on a free kick from 25 yards out that just snuck past Jamie Lowell in the Maryland net.
- The Terps were able to find chances of their own in the second half. Padilla had a free kick just tipped aside in the 67th minute before Chris Rindov had a header in the box that flashed wide on the ensuing corner kick.
- Ultimately the road side was unable to find the breakthrough and Indiana moved on to the Big Ten Tournament final against Penn State on Saturday.
- Maryland's back line performed admirably and had little it could have done about either Hoosier tally. Freshman Kento Abe put in an inspired shift at right back after an injury forced Alex Nitzl from the match.
From the Boss
"I'm proud of all of our young men tonight and the effort they put out there. Indiana capitalized on two opportunities at the beginning of the second half, but our guys didn't quit. We had a bunch of warriors out there. We fought until the final whistle and I'm very proud of the my team. I'm one proud coach." -
Sasho Cirovski
From the Boys
"Obviously the result was lacking, but I can't fault any of the guys. It was hard fought. It's always great playing Indiana. They are a solid opponent." -
Eric Matzelevich
