HAMPTON, VA – The Maryland wrestling program swept the first day of the 2022 Virginia Duals with victories over Kent State and Chattanooga on Friday afternoon.
The Terps topped Kent State 25-14Â in the first dual before defeating Chattanooga 24-14Â directly after. The team's current total of five victories is the most since the 2017-18 season. One more victory would be the program's best total since nine wins in the 2013-14 season.Â
The first dual featured five lead changes. The Terps first two victories of the afternoon came via fall from King Sandoval and Michael North. Sandoval's eighth pin of the season came early in the first period while North finished off his foe in the second period.Â
Solis was trailing Kent State with only seconds left in the bout, but a stalling point and gutsy takedown earned him the one-point victory. Once Solis won, the Terps swept the rest of the dual winning the final four bouts to clinch their fourth victory of the season.
The second dual was once again jump started by Sandoval as he earned his second pin of the day, this time four seconds faster in 1:25. Danny Bertoni followed that up with a winning takedown in sudden victory.
After the Mocs took the team score lead, Dom Solis defeated Carial Tarter to get the Terps back on track. From there, Cochran, Smith, and Schrader all won. The final four Terps from 174-pounds to upperweight were undefeated in both duals.
Sandoval spent a total of 2:49 on the mat between his two pins. Cochran accumulated 5:36 riding time on the day. Smith shutout both his opponent to outscore foes 26-0 on the day.
