Terps Earn Third Consecutive 20+ Point Victory, Topple Binghamton 76-52

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- For the first time in over a decade, the Terps (3-0) have won three consecutive games by at least 20 points as they topped Binghamton (2-1) by a score of 76-52 on Tuesday night in XFINITY Center.

Maryland got off to a fast start, scoring the first eight points of the game, and led by as many as 25 in the opening half.

Three Terps scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack. Julian Reese followed up his career-night against Western Carolina with a 19-point, seven-rebound effort. Hakim Hart shot 5-of-10 from the field for 13 points and added eight boards. Donta Scott continued to hold the steady veteran presence with a 10-point, nine-rebound effort.

The Terps led by 21 points at halftime, 44-23, for their largest lead at intermission in nearly three seasons. The last time Maryland led by as many at the half was a 42-21 lead over Marquette on Dec. 1, 2019.

Maryland took advantage of its size all night, scoring 48 points in the paint and out-rebounding the Bearcats 41-32.

Thirteen Terps saw the floor and none played more than 26 minutes.
  Willard's Take

"I think we've come out with really good defensive intensity. These guys are sticking to what we want to do from a game plan standpoint. I think we've set the tone early in games with that. I've been really pleased."

From The Guys

"Defense is a really important part of the game, especially for us on nights like this when we're not shooting the ball as well," Reese said. "I feel like we can fall back on that and use that as fuel to do everything else well."

"Even though we've been winning by 20, there's going to be nights where we're not up by that margin of points," Scott said. "We just need to keep relying on staying consistent on our defense and staying consistent on the little things that make us win games like being more physical in the paint, locking in on getting those paint touches and making those early assists out of the paint."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland jumped out to an 8-0 advantage behind four points apiece from Jahmir Young and Julian Reese. By the 9:58 mark, the Terps were up 23-6 with 16 of those points coming in the paint.
  • Thanks to sound defense and double-digit scoring efforts from both Hakim Hart (13) and Reese (10), the Terps extended their lead at halftime to 44-23. Binghamton shot just 36 percent in the half.
  • With just over eight minutes left, Maryland pushed its lead to 32 points on a Noah Batchelor free throw, marking the largest lead of the night to that point.

Double-Figure Update
  • Julian Reese scored in double-figures for the second time in as many games as he finished with 19. It was his ninth career game with 10-plus points.
  • Hakim Hart scored in double-figures for the second game in a row as well and the 27th time in his career with 13.
  • Donta Scott netted 10 for his second game this season and 47th in his career with double-figures.

Dominant Defense Again
  • The Terps forced double-digit turnovers for the third time in as many games this season, creating 15 giveaways after forcing 12 and 17 in the previous two games.
  • Maryland held the Bearcats to just nine made field goals in the first half.
  • Over its first three games Maryland is giving up an average of 20 points through the first half of play.
  • The Terps have now won nine consecutive games when holding team to under 40% shooting from the field, holding the Bearcats to just 34.4%.

3-0 On The Year
  • Maryland improved to 3-0 to start a season for the ninth consecutive year. The last time the Terps did not start 3-0 was a 77-68 loss to UCONN in the 2013-14 season opener.

20-Piece
  • With the victory Maryland picked up three-consecutive 20+ point wins for the first time since 2010-11. In that stretch the Terps beat NJIT (89-50), North Florida (85-62) and Colgate (95-40) from a span of Dec. 22, 2010-Jan. 4, 2011.
  • The last time the Terps won the first three games of a season by 20-plus points was in 2009-10, when they actually won their first four games of the season by that margin. Maryland beat Charleston Southern (89-51), Fairfield (71-42), New Hampshire (82-55), Chaminade (79-51) from Nov. 13-23, 2009.

Closing In On 1,000
  • With 10 points tonight, Donta Scott needs just 39 to reach 1,000 for his career 961. That will make him the third player on the active roster to have 1,000 career points. Don Carey now has 1,229, while Jahmir Young leads the team with 1,458.
Notes and Nuggets
  • Ike Cornish set a new career-best with nine points.
  • The Terps are now 68-13 in November dating back to 2010-11.
  • With 19 points, Julian Reese tied his career high, doing so in back-to-back games.

Up Next
  • The Terps will now head to Uncasville, CT for the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off.
  • They will open play against Saint Louis on Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPNNews before facing either Miami (FL) or Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m. (Championship Game on ESPN) or 3 p.m. (Third-Place Game on ESPNU).
