BUIES CREEK, NC – The Maryland baseball team hits the road for the second time this season as it takes on the Campbell Camels for a three-game series. The Terps won their first four games of the season, the first time they've accomplished that since 2020. The Terps' best start ever was 5-0, which has been done five times, most recently in 1968.
CAMPBELL STORYLINES
The Rotation
- Nick Dean lived up to the preseason hype as he dominated the Baylor on Friday, February 18th, to the tune of seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and not allowing a runner to advance past second base.
- Ryan Ramsey's second career start when smoothly as the junior pitched six innings and gave up just five hits and struck out three.
- Jason Savacool pitched eight innings of two-run baseball on Sunday afternoon, earning the win and completing the sweep for Maryland.
Impact Starters
- The Terps received a boost when starting centerfielder Chris "Bubba" Alleyne spurned signing with an MLB team and announcing his return to College Park for his fifth year of eligibility. This season, Alleyne is batting .267 with an OBP of .529.
- Senior leader and All-Big Ten performer Maxwell Costes is batting .429 through the first four games of the season with five extra-base hits, including two deep home runs against the Baylor pitching staff
- After a stellar freshman year where he batted .332 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs, Matt Shaw is back for the Terps. Over the weekend, Shaw terrorized the Bears, batting .538 with four runs scored, five RBIs, and two home runs. He is batting .412 through the first four games of the season.
Meet The Coaches
- Fifth-year Head Coach Rob Vaughn signed a contract extension this past summer after the program reached its first regional since 2017. Vaughn is a career 97-82 as the coach of the Terps
- Matt Swope and Anthony Papio return to the bench this year for Maryland, with Papio being named assistant coach this past summer. Mike Morrison joins the staff from Coastal Carolina, where won a national championship as a player in 2016 and where he spent the last two years as Director of Player Development and Scouting of the Chanticleers, as well as interim pitching coach. Former Maryland baseball player Tommy Gardiner joins the staff as Director of Player Development after spending the last four seasons playing under Vaughn, Swope, and Papio.
Scouting The Opponent
- The Camels are 1-3 to start the 2022 season, losing two out of three to the Appalachian State Mountaineers and falling to No. 25 East Carolina on Tuesday.
- Thomas Harrington (1-0, 0.00 ERA), Cade Kuehler, (0-1, 0.00 ERA) and Aaron Rund, (4.50 ERA) are projected to start on the mound for the Camels this weekend.
- The Camels have four players batting over .300 led by Zach Neto (.375). Zach Williams, Drake Pierson, and Lawson Harrill are all batting .333 through four games.
