D.C. Domination! No. 1 Maryland Beats No. 2 Virginia, 23-12

WASHINGTON — During the second quarter, Logan McNaney kicked away a Virginia shot as the Terrapins' offense worked quickly upfield. In transition, Keegan Khan sent a pass back to Brett Makar. The senior defenseman briefly looked like an offensive star, stepping up and firing in the first goal of his career.

It gave No. 1 Maryland a 10-5 lead over No. 2 Virginia in the second quarter. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers at the time were facing their biggest deficit of the season, as the previously unbeaten squad only fell behind Air Force and Towson by three.

Whether it was with its explosive offense or its stingy defense, Maryland men's lacrosse fired on all cylinders at Audi Field on Saturday. The Terps got some revenge against Virginia, winning the rematch of the 2021 National Championship game, 23-12, at the Capitol Lacrosse Classic.

It was the most goals Maryland (7-0) has scored against Virginia (6-1) since 1976. And the first time the Cavaliers gave up 20 goals since Feb. 27, 2021, against Syracuse.

Eleven different Terps scored on Saturday — seven of whom recorded multi-goal games. Keeghan Khan led the way with four, and Logan Wisnauskas, Jonathan Donville and Owen Murphy all had three. Luke Wierman continued dominating at the faceoff X, as Maryland won 25 faceoffs against Virginia's 14.

In addition to Makar, graduate student defenseman Matt Rahill also joined the scoring column in exciting fashion — rifling in a goal from 60 yards out to secure his first goal of the season and his first since 2020.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland scored just eight seconds into the game. Luke Wierman won the faceoff, and Khan did the honors to give the Terps a very early 1-0 advantage.
  • Goals from Jack Koras, Jonathan Donville, Owen Murphy and another one from Khan had Maryland ahead, 5-3, after one quarter.
  • The Terps outscored Virginia, 7-3, in the second quarter. In addition to Makar's goal, Anthony DeMaio, Eric Malever, Logan Wisnauskas, Murphy and Donville entered the scoring column.
  • With the Terps a man up in the third quarter, Murphy scored again to register a hat trick. Moments later, back at even strength, DeMaio stepped by his defender and rifled in his second goal of the day before Khan wrapped around the goal and scored yet again to give Maryland its 15th score.
  • Virginia started to fight back late in the third and early in the fourth, scoring four unanswered goals over a nine-minute span.
  • Maryland put an end to that run with Roman Puglise's fourth goal of the season early in the fourth quarter.
  • It was all Terps during the fourth quarter. They outscored the Cavaliers, 8-3, over the final 15 minutes.

Wisnauskas Watch
  • With three goals, he registered his 12th straight multi-goal game dating back to last season. He also added two assists.
  • The Sykesville native has scored at least a point in all 64 games of his collegiate career.

Series History
  • It was the first time Maryland and Virginia met since the two squared off in the 2021 NCAA championship game, in which the Cavaliers were victorious, 17-16.
  • The Terps are now 48-46 all-time against the Cavaliers. It was their fifth win against them at a neutral site.
Up Next
  • Maryland heads up to State College, Pa., for its Big Ten opener next Sunday.
  • The Terps take on Penn State at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 27. The game will air on the B1G Network.
