Maryland Hall of Famer Richie Moran Passes Away

Maryland Hall of Famer Richie Moran, a legendary lacrosse player and coach, passed away on Sunday April 25, 2022. He was 85. 

A member of the 1959 National Championship team, Moran was a three-time varsity athlete roaming the midfield in College Park. After graduation from Maryland in 1960, he served active duty in the US Marine Corps. 

Moran's legacy was cemented as head coach of the Cornell Big Red from 1969-97. During his 29-year tenure, he won three championships, including two over his alma mater, while taking home 15 Ivy League Titles. During that time, Moran coached current Maryland head coach John Tillman

Always heralded for his passion for the game, Moran was a three-time USILA Coach of the Year and the 1975 USILA Man of the Year. Inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Maryland Hall of Fame in 1991, Moran is a member of an astounding nine Hall of Fames. He chaired the North-South All-Star game from 1975-87. In 2012 he was honored with the "Spirit of the Tewaaraton" award for his significant contributions to the game and exemplary values.

He also stepped-up on the international stage as head coach of Team USA at the 1978 World Games and Team Ireland in the 21st Century at World Lacrosse Championships. 

Moran is survived by his wife Pat, as well as three children: Kevin, Jennifer and Kathy.
