COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team starts the 2022 season this weekend as it hosts Rhode Island, Navy, and FGCU as part of the annual Maryland Invite. All matches will be streamed live on B1G+.XFINITY Center Pavilion
On Friday night, the first 100 students in attendance will receive a Maryland Volleyball laptop sticker. On Saturday the first 100 students will receive a 'Terps After Dark' beach ball and complementary ice cream.

THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
First Serve
- Mayland begins the season with a trio of games over the course of this opening weekend as part of the Maryland Invite. The weekend features matches against Navy, Rhode Island, and 2021 NCAA Tournament team FGCU.
- Last season the Terps started the season 13-0, the best beginning since 2005.
Returning Home
- The 2022 roster boasts 11 returners from last season, including several key pieces and leaders.
- The 2021 team leaders in kills (Csire - 390), assists (Dowler - 1,090), digs (Gomillion - 495), blocks (Jones - 187), and service aces (Dowler - 37) all return.
Fresh Faces
- The 2022 Terps feature a quartet of fresh faces between freshmen and transfers. With four necomers on a team of fifteen, over 26.6 percent of the roster is new.
- A 2021 AVCA High School All-American, Laila Ivey is a premier outside hitter and was one of the top recruits in her class. A three-time team captain and two-time All-Conference, Ivey brings an impressive resume to college.
- First-team All-District and Second-team All-Conference, Ally Williams is a defensive wizard from St. Louis, MO. After finishing with over 1,000 digs in high school she's ready to make her mark in College Park.
- Incoming from her hometown of Pittsburgh, Anastasia Russ immediately became the tallest Terp when she joined the quad. Part of Pitt's Final Four run last season, Russ is an imposing presence at the net.
- A grad transfer from Temple, Gem Grimshaw has been one of the AAC's top attackers over the past four seasons. Last year, she tallied three blocks and 14 kills in a five-set thriller against Maryland.
Blocking bonanza
- Maryland has cemented itself as one of the premier blocking teams across the NCAA.
- As a team, the Terps tallied 3.11 blocks per set to lead the country. The next closest team, Tennessee, had 3.01 awhile no other team had more than three per set.
- Individually, Rainelle Jones ranked atop the country among individuals with 1.73 blocks per set. No other student-athlete had more than 1.51 per set. No one else had more than 1.45 over the season.
Scouting the Foes
- Last season, the Rhode Island Rams went 13-19 while going 5-11 in Atlantic 10. The Rams return two of their top three attackers from last season (Brynne Wright and Claire Wagner) as the Rams boast eight upperclassmen.
- The Midshipmen of Navy went 13-14 last season overall while going 8-8 within the Patriot League. They return their 2021 leaders in assists (Avery Miller - 646) as well as blocks (Maggie Bodman - 90).
- The lone NCAA Tournament qualifier in the weekend field, FGCU went 27-6 last season while rolling 15-1 in the ASUN. The Eagles return their 2021 leaders in kills (Erin Shomaker - 413), digs (Dana Axner - 490), and assists (Chelsey Lockey - 1,118). The Eagles' run came to an end to eventual champion Wisconsin, who the Terps beat earlier in the season.
