Terps Drop Road Game At Rutgers, 64-50

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Despite fighting back to get within four after an 11-point first half deficit, Maryland was not able to complete the comeback, falling 64-50 to Rutgers in Jersey Mike's Arena on Thursday evening.

The Terps struggled to make shots to begin the game, but stayed in it with stingy defense, forcing nine first-half turnovers. Keyed by strong play from Jahmir Young, Maryland opened the second half with much improved shooting to get within four. However, a 12-0 run by Rutgers, which beat No. 1 Purdue on Monday night and came in at No. 14 in the latest NET Ratings, ended the threat.

Young scored all of his 13 points in the second half and also added three assists. Don Carey was a major spark off the bench for the Terps, especially towards the end of the first half as he canned a pair of threes to keep the Terps within single digits. He finished with 12 on 4-of-8 shooting from deep. Julian Reese, who was also a big catalyst early in the second half, scored eight and grabbed six boards.

The Terps dropped to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten while Rutgers moved to 11-4 on the season with a 3-1 mark in conference play.

Willard's Take

"They're working hard, they're getting good looks, they're good offensive players. This is the first time these guys have gone through this, being on the road and being on the road again, battling tough crowds. I think that's what's great about this league is that every night there's a great crowd…I have the utmost confidence in these guys. We'll get it going offensively; I'm not worried about that."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland scored the opening four points of the game, but Rutgers responded with an 11-0 run to go up 11-4 and force a Terps timeout with 12:26 left in the first half.
  • A pair of free throws from Ian Martinez followed by a Hart dunk cut the deficit to 15-8 at the 7:42 mark. The Terps held Rutgers to a scoring drought of over five minutes to keep the deficit at just seven.
  • Down 19-8, Carey came up with a huge sequence, first diving on the floor to create a turnover and then knocking down Maryland's first three of the game. That was followed by a Martinez triple which got the Terps within five.
  • Carey came up big again just before the buzzer to knock down a triple cutting the halftime deficit to 24-17. Maryland hit 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the final 2:32 of the first half.
  • That offense carried over into the second half as the Terps hit six of their first eight shots. Young found Reese open in the paint twice and then converted a three-point play of his own as the Terps got within 34-30.
  • Keyed by what was deemed to be a flagrant foul on Reese, Rutgers went on a 12-0 run, pushing the Terps' deficit back to double-digits.

Double-Figures Update
  • Jahmir Young (13 points) scored in double-figures for the 12th time this season and 87 in his career. He now has a team-high 1,630 for his career

He moved past Landon Milbourne (2006-10, 1,104), Ekene Ibekwe (2003-07, 1,107) and Chris McCray (2002-06, 1,108). Next on the list is No. 46 Duane Simpkins (1992-96, 1123).
  • Scott also moved up in the rebounding ranks with two boards tonight. He now has 582 which moved him into a tie at No. 32 all-time with Steve Sheppard (1974-77).
