Terps Fall 3-1 At Northwestern

Box Score EVANSTON, IL —The University of Maryland volleyball team dropped its Friday-night contest against Northwestern 3-1, (25-20, 21-25, 17-25, 20-25) at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, IL. The Terps fall to 13-6 overall with a 3-4 B1G mark, while the Wildcats improve to 9-8 overall while improving to a 3-4 conference record.

The Terps took the opening set, utilizing the offensive efforts of Laila Ivey and Samantha Schnitta to rack up 14 kills, though a dominant effort from Northwestern outside hitter Julia Sangiacomo allowed the Wildcats to hit over .250 in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead. Despite hard-fought fourth frame, Northwestern rattled off a late 8-2 stretch to hand Maryland a road loss.

Senior outside hitter Sam Csire led the Terps with 13 kills while sophomore outside hitter Laila Ivey tallied 12. Sydney Dowler picked up her third double-double of the season with 35 assists and 16 digs to go along with a career-best seven kills.

Sangiacomo led Northwestern's attack, supplying 27 kills for her fourth match of the season with at least 20 kills.

Set 1: Maryland 25 - Northwestern 20
  • The Terps got on the board first after a successful Adam Hughes challenge from a net violation.
  • Maryland got off to a torrid start, starting the match on a 5-0 run to force an early Northwestern timeout.
  • Laila Ivey opened the contest on fire, racking up Maryland's first three kills.
  • The two teams matched each other point for point through the next 16 rallies, resulting in a 13-8 Maryland advantage.
  • Eight kills passed before the Terps' first attack error.
  • Jonna Spohn notched a pair of service aces to give Maryland its largest advantage of the set at 18-12, forcing a second timeout from the Wildcats.
  • Ivey totaled a set-high five kills, while Samantha Schnitta added four putaways of her own.
  • The Terps were successful from the end line, notching four service aces in the frame.

Set 2: Northwestern 25 - Maryland 21
  • Neither side could gain a multi-point advantage through the first 20 rallies, but a 3-0 run featuring kills from Laila Ivey and Samantha Schnitta gave the Terps a 13-10 edge.
  • Northwestern responded with a X-0 run, opening up a 15-13 advantage thanks to a pair of Leilani Dodson block assists.
  • Anastasia Russ single-handedly pulled off a 3-0 run to pull Maryland ahead 16-15 with a pair of kills and a block assist.
  • Both teams traded points before Maryland pulled ahead, 20-18, with a pair of points on an Eva Rohrbach kill and a Northwestern attack error. 
  • Northwestern put together a late 5-0 run bolstered by a pair of Julia Sangiacomo kills to clinch the set.

Set 3: Northwestern 25 - Maryland 17
  • The Wildcats began the frame on a 4-1 run before the two teams traded the next six points.
  • Maryland called its first timeout after Northwestern went up 8-4.
  • After the Terps pulled within two points at 11-9, the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to force another Maryland timeout.
  • Maryland got a pair of points back, but another 3-0 run put Northwestern ahead big at 19-11.
  • A 4-1 Terps run drew the score to 20-15, as Eva Rohrbach delivered a solo block to cap the run.
  • The comeback effort could not be completed, as Northwestern closed the third set on a 5-2 run. 

Set 4: Northwestern 25 - Maryland 20
  • The Terps utilized a 4-1 run punctuated by an Anastasia Russ kill to take an 11-9 advantage.
  • Northwestern came out of the timeout with a 4-0 run guided by a Gigi Navarrete service ace to flip the advantage for a 13-11 Wildcat edge.
  • A pair of kills from Sam Csire and an Eva Rohrbach solo block put Maryland up 14-13.
  • Julia Sangiacomo produced a pair of kills and Ellee Stinson grabbed a service ace as Northwestern retook a 16-14 lead.
  • A block assist from Csire and Rohrbach tied the score at 16.
  • Northwestern jumped ahead again, 20-16, with a trio of kills and a block assist.
  • Another 4-1 run put Northwestern at match point, and despite a fight from the Terps, Sangiacomo sealed the match with a kill.
