COLLEGE PARK, MD - Each week during the 2023-24 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons Terp of the Week.
This week's Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons Terp of the Week is senior outside hitter
Sam Csire of the Maryland volleyball team. Csire played a pivotal role in helping Maryland secure its first ranked win of 2023 over No. 16 Minnesota, producing 20 kills — the most by a Terp this season — while adding seven digs and three blocks. This is Csire's second Terp of the Week honor during her time at Maryland, with her first coming on Sept. 30, 2022.
Csire opened the match on fire, recording seven kills in the first set alone to help the Terps clinch the first set. As Maryland fell into a nine-point deficit in the third set, the Strongsville, OH native recorded five kills as the Terps willed themselves back into the contest to force a deuce set, which they ultimately could not take.
With Maryland in a 2-1 set deficit, Csire tied for the most kills in the fourth set, producing four as the Terps sent the match to a deciding fifth set. In the final set, the senior outside hitter recorded a kill, a dig and a block assist to help the Terps prevail over the Golden Gophers for the first time in program history.
The Terps are now 13-5 overall and 3-3 against B1G competition. They continue Big Ten play this weekend on the road against Northwestern on Friday in Evanston, IL at 8 p.m. ET, followed by a showdown against top-ranked Wisconsin Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. Both matches will be streamed on B1G+.
