Maryland Drops Game At No. 21 Villanova

Box Score VILLANOVA, PA - Maryland suffered a 57-40 loss to No. 21 Villanova at Finneran Pavilion in the Gavitt Tip-Off Games on Friday night. 

Julian Reese led the Terps with 10 points and six rebounds. 

In the first collegiate game he's played in his hometown of Philadelphia – Donta Scott finished with seven points.. 

Maryland is now 1-3 on the season. 

Tyler Burton (15 points and six rebounds) led Villanova (3-1).


Breaking Down The Action:
  • Villanova opened the action with a 13-2 run in the first 4:37 of play keyed by three Wildcat three-pointers.
  • Nova led by 22, 33-11, after an Eric Dixon driving lay-up at the 6:12 mark of the first half. 
  • Maryland then scored four straight, but Villanova closed the half with a 6-0 run taking a 39-15 lead at intermission. 
  • In the second half, Maryland's defense played better and the Terps outscored Villanova, 25-18.

  • Julian Reese reached double figures for the 32nd time in his career (70 games).

Scott Climbing The Charts:
  • After scoring seven points, Donta Scott is just shy of No. 27 on the scoring career charts at Maryland with 1,353 points behind Tony Massenburg with 1,354. 
  • Scott played in his 133rd career game which is tied with Eric Hayes (2006-10) for 11th-most in program history. He also started his 118th career game which is the ninth-most in program history.

Rookies Get The Nod:
  • With DeShawn Harris-Smith and Jamie Kaiser, Jr., earning the starting nod, it marked the first time since since 2019 for Maryland to start a pair of freshmen: Eric Ayala and Jalen Smith. That 2018-19 season, Ayala and Smith each started 33 of the 34 games played.

Up Next:
  • Maryland returns home to host UMBC on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at the XFINITY Center. The game will tip at 7 PM and will be televised on BTN. It will also be carried on the Maryland Sports Radio Network and the One Maryland App. That will kickoff a three-game home stand for the Terps.
