COLLEGE PARK, MD - After a three-game road stretch, Maryland returns home on Tuesday night to host UMBC beginning a three-game home stand. The game will tip at 7:00 PM and will be televised on BTN. Fans can listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche and Walt Williams. Maryland is 15-0 all-time against the Retrievers with all coming in College Park.
Home Court Looks To Help After Slow Start
- The Terps are coming off a road loss at No. 21 Villanova last Friday night. Julian Reese led Maryland with 10 points as the lone scorer in double-figures.
- Maryland has been hamstrung by a slow start offensively to the season averaging just 58.0 points through four games.
- Defensively, Maryland is allowing just 60.0 points per game which ranks 33rd nationally and fifth in the Big Ten. The Terps gave up under 60 to both Mount St. Mary's (53) and Villanova (57). Against the Wildcats, their previous low was 72 points in the loss to Penn.
- The last time Maryland started 1-3 was in 2000-01 when the Terps opened with three games in Hawaii followed by a road trip to Wisconsin. Maryland then won 10 straight and reached the NCAA Final Four.
- Dating back to last season, Maryland has a 12-game overall home win streak following the season-opening victory against Mount St. Mary's.
- The program record for an overall home win streak is 27 from Dec. 6, 2015-Feb. 13, 2016.
- Following a loss at home to No. 16 UCLA last December, the Terps then won 11 straight including nine Big Ten games at XFINITY.
The Terps have won 12 consecutive home games entering Tuesday night.
Fear The Jahmir
- After a standout season in 2022-23, Jahmir Young, one of the top point guards in the country, has racked up the preseason accolades. He has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 and is a member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as well. Young was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, the first unanimous pick for Maryland since Cowan in 2019.
- Additionally, Young picked up Preseason All-America honors from Blue Ribbon and Lindy's, while The Field of 68 had him on the All-Big Ten Preseason Team and ranked him as the No. 35 of 100 top players nationally entering 2023-24.
- Last season, Young was a second team All-Big Ten selection, was named to the USBWA All-District Team, and selected to the NABC All-District Second Team. Additionally, he was chosen as the Pigskin Club of Washington Collegiate Player of the Year.
- Young is looking to become just the sixth NCAA player since 2006 to post 1,000 points at two different institutions during his career. Prior to the the extra year of eligibity due to COVID-19, only three players had achieved the feat in the past 20 years. Young's 2,027 career points ranks 2nd among active players in the NCAA behind Max Abmas of Texas (2,574 pts).
Jahmir Young is a member of the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Bob Cousy Watch List, and was a unanimous pick to the preseason All-B1G Team.
JuJu Beast
- After a breakout sophomore campaign that saw Julian Reese become one of the top big men in the Big Ten, the Baltimore native enters 2023-24 with high praise. Reese joined Jahmir Young on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
- Reese showed his impact for the Terps in 2022-23 as he scored in double-figures in 22 games with a career-high 24 points against Coppin State. He had seven double-doubles on the year including 17 points, 12 rebounds at Ohio State.
- Had one of his best league outings going toe-to-toe with Purdue's Big Ten Player of the Year Zach Edey where Reese scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while adding three rebounds and committing zero turnovers.
- Reese finished 2022-23 tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points and led the Terps in rebounds (7.2).
- In two NCAA Tournament games last year, Reese averaged 15.5 points against West Virginia and No. 1 Alabama.
- His 63.2 field goal percentage last season stands as the third-best mark in Maryland program history for a single season.
Julian Reese is averaging 12.3 points and 7.3 rebounds to start the 2023-24 campaign.
Don't Sleep On Donta
- Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points last season. Through four games this year, he now has 1,353 points and 720 rebounds. He is also the 17th Terp to post 1,300 points and 600 rebounds in a career.
- Darryl Morsell (1,090 points / 510 rebounds / 2018-21) and Anthony Cowan (1,881 points / 508 rebounds / 2017-20) were the most recent Terps to post 1,000/500.
- Scott is now 28th all-time in scoring and needs two points to move past Tony Massenburg (1354, 1985-90) for 27th. He needs three more boards to pass Massenburg (722, 1985-90) for No. 13 all-time.
- Additionally, thanks to his fifth season, Scott (133 GP - t11th most, 118 GS - 9th most, 3889 MIN - 10th most) will have a chance to set Maryland's games played record (141, Jake Layman, 2012-16), the games started record (136, Steve Blake, 1999-03), and minutes played record (4568, Greivis Vasquez, 2006-10).
Donta Scott continues to climb the all-time record lists for the Terps.
