Terps Defeated By Indiana On The Road In Four Sets

Box Score BLOOMINGTON, IN — The University of Maryland volleyball team faltered Friday night in its second match of the season against Indiana, suffering a defeat against the Hoosiers, 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 23-25, 14-25) at Wilkinson Hall in Bloomington, IN.
 
In the 10th battle between Adam Hughes and former Maryland head coach Steve Aird, the Hoosiers jumped out to an early lead, recording 16 kills in the opening frame. Just as Indiana looked to take a two-set advantage with a 19-11 score in the second, Maryland embarked on a 15-5 run to steal the stanza. 
 
The Terps could not hold a six-point lead of their own in the third, as the Hoosiers took a late edge and held on to take a 2-1 upper hand. Indiana closed out the contest with a dominant fourth set in which it never trailed and hit .324.
 
Senior pin hitter Samantha Schnitta played her best match in a Maryland uniform, tying a season-high 16 kills and setting a season best with 10 digs for her first double-double as a Terrapin. Two other Terps recorded double-digit digs, with senior libero Lilly Gunter and freshman defensive specialist Jonna Spohn both tallying 14.
 
Candela Alonso-Corcelles powered the Indiana offense, producing 22 kills while Morgan Geddes and Avry Tatum both notched double-digit kills from the outside.
 
The Terps fall to 16-13 with a 6-11 Big Ten record this year, while the Hoosiers continued their strong campaign with a 19-11 record and a 9-8 conference mark. Indiana now sits just one win away from going .500 against Big Ten foes for the first time since 2002.
 
How It Happened
 
Set 1: Indiana 25 - Maryland 21
  • Erin Morrissey opened the scoring with a kill on the opening rally. She and Eva Rohrbach combined for a double block for the match's first two points.
  • Morrissey accounted for the Terps' first four points with three kills and the double block.
  • Both squads struggled from the service line as both teams recorded a pair of errors as Maryland built an 8-5 advantage.
  • The Hoosiers tied the frame at 10 with a pair of kills from Candela Alonso-Corcelles.
  • Indiana took its first edge of the frame at 12-11.
  • A three-point stretch from the Hoosiers powered by two Morgan Geddes kills and a Ramsey Gary service ace put Indiana up 16-13 and drew a Maryland timeout.
  • Out of the break, Indiana scored the next two points and forced another Maryland timeout at 18-13.
  • The two teams alternated sideouts on the ensuing nine rallies before the Terps broke through on Erin Morrissey's sixth kill of the set, cutting the deficit to 22-19.
  • Three points was the closest Maryland could come to taking the lead, as Geddes clinched the opening set for the Hoosiers with a kill.

Set 2: Maryland 26 - Indiana 24
  • The teams traded sideouts for the first five rallies before Morgan Geddes scored a kill at 4-2.
  • Samantha Schnitta logged Maryland's first three putaways of the set.
  • Indiana put together a 6-2 run, causing a Maryland timeout with a 10-6 scoreline.
  • A pair of points from the Hoosiers extended the run and yielded another Terrapin timeout at 12-6.
  • Maryland responded with a 3-0 run featuring a Sam Csire kill, a double block from Schnitta and Anastasia Russ and a Jonna Spohn service ace.

  • A 4-0 scoring run followed from the Terps with kills from Eva Rohrbach, Sam Csire and Sydney Dowler to put Maryland up 10-4.
  • The Hoosiers responded with a 4-1 run capped by a solo block from Savannah Kjolhede to cut Maryland's lead to 11-8.
  • Maryland's lead was cut to one at 16-15 with a Candela Alonso-Corcelles service ace. A Terrapin attack error leveled the score at 16.

Set 4: Indiana 25 - Maryland 14
  • Indiana continued its momentum early in the fourth, jumping out to a 6-2 score.
  • After Sydney Dowler put down a solo block, the Hoosiers extended their lead to 8-3 with a kill from Candela Alonso-Corcelles and a double block.
  • Maryland crawled back into the stanza with a 6-2 run as beneficiaries of three kills and three Indiana attack errors to make it 12-9.
  • A 3-0 run from Indiana reestablished a 15-9 gap.
  • The closest Maryland could come to Indiana was five points, as Indiana closed out its 19th victory of the campaign.
